A few months ago, I watched this film and loved it, but didn't really look heavily into the costume design or aesthetics. Last night, I remembered this movie again as I was going through a lunarcore thread and decided I'd take a look back into it.

The film(Europa Report) is about a team of scientists going on a 3 year journey to Europa(moon of Jupiter) to look for signs of life. Its setting is only a few years into the future, and the film is extremely grounded in reality(besides one or two lines of dialogue mentioning the temperature being absolute zero and dropping, it's all as accurate as you can get in future sci-fi).

So why not take a look at the costume design for these astronauts 20 minutes into the future?

First up is this pic of the marine biologist, Katya. Obviously the first thing that stands out is the jacket, in what I would almost call a "dull silver" color. Accents include the black separating the darker grey panels for some contrasts. Go lower and you find a pair of navy pants with white accents. I think this color pairing could add a lot to lunar, because there really isn't a lot of navy used as of now.

This picture shows three of the crew all doing or just finishing physical activity. Their outfits throughout all of this scene and some others are obviously just techwear with the same palette focus the rest of the film uses. The individual pieces are things like long sleeve grey shirts, short sleeve navy shirts, navy pants, etc.

Once again, the focus is less on the exact style of clothes(though the techwear nature of the fabrics obviously lends a hand), and more on the color palettes used. Dark/Silver greys, navy, white/black accents and the like are prominent, and pretty easy to find in every day life, but not combined in this way(at least on purpose). This is where lunarcore can excel, by using the color palettes to give off a space, lunar, or futuristic vibe without looking like you walked out of a cosplay center or movie set.

Finally, this picture shows off probably the most fantasy/high fashion piece used in the film(unless you want to count the space suits..). These are definitely futuristic, but not too far out of reach. They are very similar to MA-1 Bomber jackets, but much slimmer cut and shorter cuffed than many you'll find on the market.

The colors used are primarily the same, greys, navys, and black accents. The white reflective strip adds to it, though I think the blue straps make it a little too busy around the arms. If you were looking to go full lunar, I think this is what you'd do. Just try not to push the envelope too much, unless you want people to think you just came home from Mars.

Forgot to mention, to find examples for the palette inspo I only scanned through the film for a few minutes, so give it a watch if you're looking for more. I'm gonna look more into the colors used and see about finding some pieces to cop. cheers yo.

here's some advice for lunar threads: imo don't start a new thread until you have enough material to support the entire thread yourself. no one has enough content or new ideas to contribute to get a sizable thread, its not even worth having them. just hold on to your ideas for a little longer until there is a thread with more going on etc...

my gripes with lunarcore:

at it's heart, it's an aesthetic that stems from something insanely interesting (space, exploration of the unknown/abyss, zero gravity, escapism, romance), takes it and dilutes it to mean nothing more than a modified take on fast fashion's idea of military. imo, thereby limits the silhouettes, and therefore potential that this aesthetic has.

this is where goof is interesting to me - while there is a limited palette, the fluidity of the silhouettes through the emphasis on draping (and therefore movement) brings an element of time; that is, the way in which the garment hangs is forever fully influenced by the wearer and will seldom hang the same way in the span of a minute, hour, day.

i just think it could benefit with exploring, in a more meaningful manner, the very thing it's referencing. dumping some things to illustrate this

all the stuff im posting i envision to be offset with the more 'military' inspired stuff, like a dusty heavy jacket

this is mainly because, besides poet who was going after designer clothing and unique shit off ebay and meta who has some expensive stuff but not a whole lot i dont think, none of us that i know of have a very good budget for clothes. trust me if i had the money i'd be experimenting way more with silhouette than with palette. palette is easy imo, design is the hard part. i just ordered a sewing machine though so hopefully i'll be able to start making my own shit within a budget and play around with some new designs. i've got a shit ton of sketches for different shit.

He had no fucking idea and I was miring pretty bad, I found the brand though, it's called Crosshatch.

Really interesting stuff going on there, and Damir Doma reminds me a lot of it.
