Lads, im thinking of making my own RAF style jacket/parka.

How shit/flawed is my method and how likely am i to fuck it up?

Basically, this is what ive cooked up.
>buy plain piece of fabric
>Print artwork i want on the back of jacket (most probably a beksinski painting) using this method
https://youtu.be/yO3qZR8ahlk
>leave 1.5cm border around said image for sewing into using this method.
https://youtu.be/ODoLrCTxp5o
>Cut hole in back of a plain black Parka/jacket and sew into it using above method
?????????????
>cheap Raf parka

I understand theres a lot more to the appeal of actual raf parkas than just the fancy image on the back, but i dont feel like shelling out 10k to buy one. I can see it coming out a lot worse than i expect it to but i guess its worth a try, if not just for practice.

if you cut a hole in the parka, it will drape incorrectly forever thereafter unless the fabric you're replacing it with is of the same weight, drapes in the same manner, and you sew it absolutely perfectly.

just sew the patch onto the parka.

I myself made a New Years resolution to learn how to hand-sew my own clothing without a machine. I have nothing but free time and I have always hated using a machine because its loud and stressful.

"The goal of (sustainable fashion] is to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of human impact on the environment and social responsibility. It can be seen as an alternative trend against fast fashion." Wiki sez. I guess it means that you try to minimize the negative impact the creation of clothing has on the earth so that later generations can still benefit from it. Repurposing clothes is part of it, but also using natural dyes and creating clothes that have a longer lifespan than just one season. Story MFG seems like a good example.

There are plenty tutorials online. You measure what you need to take in. You fold the pants inside out. You draw a line, stitch and cut the leftover fabric. I think a better project for a beginner would be a tshirt. It's a simple project to get familiar with the sewing machine and it's various stitches. It also gives you a basic idea of how a garment is constructed. The pastebin has links to websites that offer patterns. Instructions are included with them.

I have two questions.
What percent cotton/poly was yours and what dye/how much did you use?
I have a 65/35 and I used to packs of rit dye with hot water and salt and my jacket is noticeably darker but it isn't black more of a very dark green and in some light black-ish with the pattern coming through.
Also does anyone know if I will have to use a dye remover before trying to darken it again or should I just keep adding dye to it? I'd post a picture but I have no form of camera at the moment.
thank you.

I would like to create a big ass back patch for this jacket I am working on. I want it to be a tall rectangle and basically cover almost all of the back. Canvas or cotton would be cool, I don't want the 3d effect of embroidery, and the design is extremely minimal. Does anyone know how I would go about this? I was thinking of getting it printed on a T shirt and then cutting it but honestly I think it is too big for that. Is there any website where I could just print it on a stretch of cotton fabric? Pic related, this is just about the size I would like the patch to be, but its definitely not going to be as corny as this one or on a vest.

(2/2)
>Cut out the lightest color for the first layer stencil. We have three for this one.
>Layer two, cut out the lightest and second lightest color.
>Third layer is everything but black.
>Iron on the first stencil (lightest color)
>With a spray bottle (very fine mist- this is important) of a 50/50 bleach and water mix, spray a conservative amount of bleach onto the stencil/shirt.
>Dab it up with a paper towel immediately
>Peel off the stencil and wait a sec for the bleach to take effect. This is variable on your design, more time= lighter color.
>Carefully line up the next stencil and do the same thing. Since you have the two lightest colors cut out, the first layer will now be lighter and the second will be the initial spray's color.
>After you've sprayed every layer, submerge the shirt in cold water for a bit. This will neutralize the bleach and stop the process.
That's pretty much it, it takes a little tweaking to make it look clean, but after a few attempts you'll start to develop your own technique.
