I don't care that I'll probably be laughed out of here, but on the off chance someone doesn't: can a kind member of /fa/ help me out by explaining the cut/style of the coat from Sherlock? I've been able to find out the brand of the coat, but it's discontinued and resellers seem to think it's worth more than my college tuition, so I'm looking for a more affordable lookalike. I like the style (the length of it) as well as the huge collar that can be turned up for extra versatility in bad weather. the buttons and color are nice as well. are there actual terms for this or do I just have to keep going to stores hoping to find something that has these qualities? thanks in advance to anyone who can help and fuck you to the first guy to tell me to go back to /tv/, I didn't even come from there.

I'd probably recommend going with a single breasted long coat. it only has one row of buttons but has the collar and everything. Pretty much every designer makes their take on them so it shouldnt be so tough to find.

I've been told if you don't cheap out and invest in a good one, they can last years and years, so price isn't an issue, within reason.

within reason is a relative statement here. our sticky site (tuxbell) has a list of shops for your area. Longcoats can look very good, especially with scarves. They don't have an elastic hem (bottom portion) though, so you may want to wear a sweater or something underneath if its too cold

thank you so much, I'll give it a look. I saw it earlier but didn't know it had shop listings, too. also, thanks to >>7597991 . this board is really friendly, I apologize for coming off so rude in my OP. literally every other board I've posted in has been a nightmare.

lol, tbh, effay can be just as rude if not more.

if you're going for a longcoat like that (made of wool and everything) I would say:

start somewhere around 250$ usd (these willl be very cheap coarse materials but will suffice for a few years)

around 500$ usd is usually intermediate where the good materials and construction start coming in ( they'll feel nice and be well crafted).

wool is a wonderful material because it can get wet and still keep you warm (though you dont want to intentionally soak it too much)

It's a double breasted top coat. I recommend getting something shorter. Longer overcoats are out of style and as you can see can make you appear short. That coat is probably a pretty hi end item so it has a lot of nice detailing you won't see on cheaper coats. You can also just get a peacoat, which is mostly the same thing

>> No.7598112

>>7598104
This, the peacoat is overplayed as hell but it almost always looks better than the top coat.

so far you guys have been brilliant. I'm on a student budget, but 250ish sounds reasonable if it's gonna last me. I've heard about wool and I actually have a short peacoat that I adore, which is why I was looking to stay with wool for my next one.

>>7598104
I'm 6'3", would that negate the "shortening" effect of a longer coat? your comment about the lack of detail on cheaper coats is definitely true, I think a lot of my trouble on finding something I like is because they all seem so plain, like something is missing from them (they've all been relatively cheap).

go for a longcoat it will balance out your legs and make you look hella good with the elongated silhouette. Maybe not one that goes down past your knees like the op but long coats are fucking amazing

It might, but I would still recommend most men stay away from long overcoats. Above the knee is what you'd typically be looking for.

The coat from Sherlock had this interesting black and grey cross pattern which was interesting, but I don't know of anything like that.

>> No.7598187

>>7598161
I agree, I like the way they look, and the knee seems like a good cutoff point.

long coats and top coats are different, right? I keep finding top coats, which seem to be meant to go over a suit. they seem to be kind of "fat" to accommodate the suit, is that correct?

>> No.7598202

Top coats and overcoats aren't that different. Top coats will tend to be shorter, but the terms are often used interchangeably

longcoat is just a generic term. You're right, many of the coats are made to accomodate a suit. You can get the sleeves tailored and probably an inch or so around the chest but the shoulders must fit you near perfectly.

You may even want to size down, but I think with how tall you are compared to the fit models they use to make clothing for most brands you'll be fine with your true size, especially if you arent rail skinny. unfitted around the waist coats can still look good if you combine it with a fitted pant, though. pic related

the extra length around the chest also allows for a 'gentlemans lean', so you can bend down and pick stuff up without feeling like you're a mummy.

>>7598184
yeah, you guys definitely convinced me above the knee is the way to go. I'm gonna be a bit annoying: is there an ideal spot between the hip/knee for a coat to reach? closer to one or the other? or is it just personal preference?

>>7598206
I'm not skinny, I've got a fairly average build now that I've been hitting the gym for a year (/fit/ was one of the boards I had a bad experience at, haha). I like that picture, I'm a fan of that open coat look and wearing something more fitted beneath it.

I'd say somewhere between mid-thigh and the knee is the way to go. Any higher than that and it loses it's longcoatness and just looks like a regular coat that's too long.

>> No.7598283

>>7598251
I like the look in this one. and something that prevents that tightness would be great. I have a weird body shape with dress shirts, my arms are too long in shirts that fit my torso properly so I always am a bit restricted if I'm dressed a formally. having a coat that doesn't add to that would be nice, I'll keep that term in mind!

I hear you. If you save up you may be able to cop a coat from ann demeulemeester ( most of them have the same construction of the hem as the B&W picture) and usually have overlong sleeves (even on models who are 6'0 and up)

usually they retail for like 1200$ or so, but you can get them on sale for 500-700 no issue really.

sometimes it's nice to have something you want but will probably never get. it is way better than being disappointed by the reality of it, you know? yea, its cool to have something to aim for. at the same time i've spent way too much money on clothing at this point and I still want more.

Burberry is fairly good quality. They pretty much invented gabardine wool. Their coats are very traditional and clean. It is over-priced for the product, though, and way overlicensed so gets a bad rep around here.

the ccp costs so much because of what you dont see, the construction he does taped seams and the whole nine, but its far from traditional.

you should check out lanvin longcoats and the a1923 ( a diccianoveventitre ) english longcoat out sometimes as well. beautiful really

don't size down on overcoats, they're meant to look a bit baggy for suit/layering
unless you're talking about trench coats/mac that are worn in cooler days over a shirt or tshirt
