I just blew my hair out and it looks like pic related. It looks okay but I feel like I could get it to feel softer and give it more body.

Any product recommendations ? Thanks.

Is the afro played out? Can it be done? What styles fit it well, and for what resons?

OP here
I wear street wear and I'd definitely say I'm a little more mainstream/pleb than most posters here.

But I say Crews and Hoodies go really well with this hair. I'm gonna be 100 I can't think imagine of any fits that wouldn't go with this hair style.

What other styles were you thinking about

I am not quite sure. I've always been a fan of the "smart" look (J. Crew, Polo, etc) and some of the more conservative streetwear options, and I'm just not sure my hair would fit it. Been thinking of getting a hair cut for a while, but not quite sure what I'd like to try.

What do you guys think of the french braids style popularized by rappers like A$AP Rocky and Pusha T?

Pic related

I would like to try it, but I'm afraid this look can only really work while wearing hats.

I agree I feel like you'd need a hat to pull it off.

You can get away with Cornrows though pro

Both those and cornrows look thuggish as fuck. Unless you are a pretty negro with soft features and light skin, you'll just look like Jaykwon the drug dealer and all the white qt3.14 will avoid you

He's a rapper and his image is carefully crafted. You are a nobody

Can we get some afro inspo fits, plz?
I'm 4 months into mine (about ~2.5 inches) and I'm getting mad discouraged because I'm at that halfway mark where curls just look like naps.

Also when you're growing it out about when do you stop picking your hair out?

I think I'd go ahead and cut my hair now and just start fresh from there if I were you

>>7566415
You can pull off cornrows fine white girls don't mind it, french braids are different though I wouldn't say thuggish though. More like silly.

Box braids are a good option too anon

I am not sure where you live but here in North America, cornrows are only worn ironically by white meme rappers, outdated negros who are still living in 2007 and tacky FOB immigrants, paired with faded jeans and Armani shirts.

Dude I live in Richmond Va, I have have friends and know people that rock cornrows unironically and can into white girls fine.

I'll look around for some anon and I have to pick it out if I sleep on it still but you should pick it a little every day to get the natural oils moving around. In fact that will help growth and help you get past that stage

You're looking at year(s) of growth. Because of the twists, afro hair seems to grow a lot slower than straight hair.

>Also when you're growing it out about when do you stop picking your hair out?

You have to pick it unless you want dreadlocks. Or you could try products I suppose and look like Danny Brown (read: like a fucking clown)

Damn, fair enough.
I'll start back picking.

How did you style yours when you were at my length, tho? I feel like a bum.

I don't know how my fellow brothers grow their hair out for that long, honestly. Do any of you get told to cut it for jobs and shit?

Lol I did to be honest I feel your pain. I made sure it was really moist it def helps, but if you get lineups every week or so people will know you actually give a fuck and it just looks better.

MAKE SURE you tell you barber just to get your Hair Line

The alternative would be too get a temp fade while you wait is what a friend of mine did and his afro looks fine

Oh fuck that, but yeah I've thought about that. I think I will get one pretty soon.

I've been using a handfull of coconut oil and olive oil fresh out the shower every day.
That's sound about right?

Sounds great I'm sure it doesn't look as bad as you think. Work on them line ups though every other week at least ( hate the barber too though so I feel your pain

I reas coconut/mineral oils clog up poreson your head making hair grow slower.

Is this bullshit? I like how thick, moisturised and volumised my hair is when using oil but i used shamp to wash it out cus of this.
