I feel like Vans are one step above being made of cardboard. They're the "I didn't have enough money for anything else so these will have to do for the next three months" of shoes. They're the shoes you should be embarrassed to admit you have. They're the cheapest pieces of crap that are a 'recognized' or 'accepted' brand, unless you count Toms. Toms don't deserve to exist.

Why put them in there? What does skateboarding even mean in 2014? The era of Vans being American-made ended a decade and a half ago. I can remember a time when they might evoke images of the west coast, the 70s, etc. But nobody could say with a straight face that this means anything anymore while the shoes are assembled on the other side of the world in China. They're a joke now. It's the era of "Top Skateboarding Fails" videos on YouTube where you can watch obnoxious 13-year-olds hurt themselves, and there's general disillusionment with the idea that skateboarding is rebellious or cool in any real way.

And everybody wears skateboarding shoes, now, because they're affordable.
