why do you fuccbois buy cheap $100 TNF hard shells? it's like buying H&M jeans or something and thinking they'll last. at least invest your money into Goretex Paclite if you're on a a budget. I recommend Marmot minimalist and Arcteryx Beta SL.
>>7525185
this nigga gets it. the beta series from arcteryx has more of an athletic fits and they actually care about the cut of their clothing.
also every TNF shell you see is most likely going to be the resolve or the venture jesus christ.

More seriously, I think the marmot minimalist is better designed than the beta sl.

>> No.7532538

A bit offtopic, but anyone checked out the new H&M athletic collection, including an "outdoor" jacket with taped seams etc. I'm assuming the quality is not worth it but it still seem kind of interesting to see them get into low-tier techwear.

I'm not saying TNF is a bad brand, I'm just saying the go to $100 venture and resolve shells are bad buys. the DWR won't hold up as well and you'll probably end up replacing it in 1-2 years. and I'm not even sure those jackets have cinched hoods, which are essential.
>>7532707
it's bretty good but step up and cop the torrentshell stretch instead. gussetted underarms make a world of difference, and are as important as cinched hoods, and the thing I like most about arcteryx is all their shells come with both features for extra comfy.

>soft shell, it will not keep you dry if there's rain.

And the hardshell won't keep you dry if you're active, in addition to feeling less comfortable normally, looking less /fa/, and probably being harder to move in!

Except that statement is actually true.

Softshells are better than hardshells for the vast majority of real world uses. I'm not really up to writing a detailed, entry level explanation of why, but think about it: when was the last time you, in an urban area, spent more than an hour so so outside in the rain? Unless you're working as a security guard or street vendor, you just don't stand out in downpours for hours at a time. You go from one building to another via enclosed transit methods.

>>7532483
I am pro cheap hard shell, though. If you understand their limitations, there's nothing wrong with most of the crop of entry-level ~$100 hardshells. I like Marmot's PreCip in that base level, and its Oracle is really nice for just a little more.

I will say don't get TNF, though - at least the cheap HyVents (TNF's brand name for its waterproofs) use coatings instead of membranes, which is all of my what.

There's nothing special about PacLite, and Gore's even replacing it with Active now, and IIRC everything with the Active membrane is a 3L.

Also, I'm going to put in a word for Nixwax Analogy. It runs hotter than conventional WP/B fabrics, so it's not really for the summer, but otherwise it's more breathable and durable (the two main problems with full waterproofs) than anything else out there.

Anyway, the OP pretty much wants a softshell, and I'll make some suggestions tomorrow.

Alright then, I'm willing to drop around 250$ for a hard shell. Want something that's not extremely puffy in it's cut. I think water and wind resistant is already implied... Something that's minimalistic, I would prefer no obvious branding (like with TNF jackets) but I wont really mind it.

I'm trying to develop a personal style that is sort of blend of both street and techwear. I feel like pieces that can be classified under both styles can work very well together.
