Best way to describe it so far is an Asian theme I suppose. Cherry blossoms, Kitsune (in semi woodblock style) and then just more of personal philosophy tattoo that draws from an Alan Watts philosophy.

Given the amount of planning and multiple appointments it can take to finish a large piece like a back piece or sleeve or something, it seems like something you have to work on for quite a while. Also, look at people like Scott Campbell or Maxime Buechi who have pretty extensive waiting lists for people wanting to get tattooed by them. What else is that sort of arrangement if not premeditated and thought out? As with the other comment, I'm sure there are people who have spontaneous choices that don't have much behind it, but it's not like everyone who gets a tattoo is of one mind.

I think this, in general, is the kind of thing I expect of someone with an "aesthetic" tattoo. I assume they are kind of stupid, kind of narcissistic, and generally unwilling to try to understand or appreciate other people. I seldom use the word "shallow", but I think it applies in this case.

I think that tattoos, at their best, try to be honest and meaningful in a personal way. I don't mean 'words of wisdom' written across your chest (easiest way to regret your tattoo), but something that is symbolic, maybe. Maybe even just something fun.

We're all complex products of disparate influences. Tattoos that show that are more interesting, to me, than "aesthetics". I think you have to be very single-minded to get a tattoo just for how it looks.

That said, I still wouldn't get a tattoo. I'm almost a new person with every passing year. I can't imagine any tattoo having lasting appeal.

One ring to rule them all? LOTR helped me alot through some shitty high school years. So it got some meaning to me I guess.

People like to collect pointless things. How many people do you know that collect music albums even though they pirate everything first? I guarantee you it's not just because they "want to support the artist". It's partially a credibility thing: "yes, I really do care about music", but it's also an urge to collect objects. Tattoos are like that. You get one, then you want another, then you're in collector mode.

Different people will have different criteria for what a tattoo should be: for some, it's 'meaning', for others, it's more image-related. Either way, the drive often is to finish a collection, to complete a "sleeve", to somehow make all the pieces come together into a coherent whole.

And, of course, there's also the ever-present need to do something transgressive. There will always be a large number of people who think tattoos are stupid, pointless, etc. So it will always seem a little bit rebellious to do it. I think that's what gets a lot of people to start. Or some may do it from an emotional connection to some kind of symbol. I don't know.

There are many reasons, anyhow. Not just one.

Was really considering getting the symbol for the Noble Eightfold path as a tattoo, provided the artist could make a very interesting design out of it. I've always liked sailing/the sea as well so the resemblance to a ship's wheel is a big plus for me.

One thing I've noticed about most of everyone I know and met who have tattoos is that they have some of the most boring personalities for not being a "straight-laced" person or w/e.
