pulp friction is a romp and a half, lots of tarantino "wowzee ya gots me i am aroused/surprised" moments, but it's not some groundbreaking narrative piece. it's a pulp collage on film, that's all it was meant to be.

my fave qt film is probs jackie brown. that shit is tuned so finely to the LA that quentin plays from.

also i'd love to see tarantino cry as the modern cinema slaverycrown is torn from his veiny brow and thrown on steve mcqueen's limey head.

That hasn't been true in decades. Citizen Kane was notable for being the first really clear example of Auteur Theory in american cinema.

At the time it was released, and for a few decades afterwards it was the greatest movie to ever come out of the American Hollywood system.

But Most Critics agree that it's been surpassed by films like Amadeus or The Godfather.

Namedropping internet faggots still like to bring it up though, just to prove that they've seen/heard of it.

well it didn't disprove anything. It was a name drop and that's it.

Honestly, I don't even like Citizen Kane.

Greatest film ever made? Only because our command of montage was so underdeveloped in the 40's that it blew everything else away.

You don't have to look very far forward to find films that match it in technique but are better acted, better written, and match it in technique.

Hitchcock's vertigo for example.

Fuck, I think Welle's own Touch of Evil surpasses Citizen Kane in technique and application of montage.

By any measure, Citizen Kane has a weak as fuck script.

There's actually some pretty cool film history in the Russian constructivism(pre-stalin)/formalism(after stalin) era.

Kuleshov was one of the first film theorists/professors. Taught both Eisenstein(who directed Battleship Potemkin) and Vertov. Eisenstein broke off and went in a more narrative direction, while Vertov stayed with Kuleshov and made non-narrative films. They were all super interested in Rodchenko, pic related.

It's basically the start of montage theory. Vertov and Kuleshov were interested in the "collision of images" while Eisenstein was interested in the "linkage of images"

There's 4 types of cuts that they came up with:
i. Rhythmic –generalized action
ii. Tonal – colors/lighting/tone
iii. Form – one shape to another
iv. Directional – car chase (Godard famously plays with this in the beginning of Breathless)

When the Russians get their art right, it's hard to top.
Tarkovsky is the obvious name that comes to mind, I'd recommend anything by him p much.
Also check out Klimov (Come and See) and Motyl's White Sun of the Desert, both are def worth watching.

Enter the Void is far more interesting if you've read the Tibetan Book of the Dead, have knowledge of DMT, the possible interdependent relationships between the two, and have meditated and deeply thought about the Bardo, otherwise, sure, it's a very boring piece of work.

It's kind of the same with Holy Mountain, and having a deep appreciation for occultism and mysticism prior, so you can get the absurdist simulacrum of it all.

Really not trying to come off pretentious here, because that's just my personal view.

>> No.7382557

>>7382427
but the idea of the Tibetan book of the dead is only explored at the very end (which was rather decent, I have to admit), but the rest is 2 hours of French cunts doing drugs in Tokyo with sparkly lights (who doesn't like sparkly lights, righ? I don't)
Weesatakhul does a better job at exploring transmigration.
Also the thing I don't like about Jodorowsky is that his symbols are way too obvious and that takes away from the fun one might have at attemp interpretations of his films, but that's just my opinion

>> No.7382587

>>7382557
Those are some pretty valid points. I haven't seen Weesatakhul's exploration of the bardo/transmigration of the consciousness, so for me, Enter the Void was pretty novel. I also don't really care for Jodorowsky's ubiquitous symbol/imagery of youthful people getting shot with colorful paint projecting out of them, and birds flying away from their hollowed corpses. It feels especially awkward the way it's forced into Holy Mountain.

Huh, /fa/ movies.
I don't think I know what an /fa/ movie is. At first I thought we were talking about 'style over substance' movies, but after reading through this thread I think I was mighty wrong.

This thread proves exactly what /fa/ movies are. Movies you can mention and talk about to make yourself look good.

See, the movie itself is only secondary, it's all about YOU!

As long as you can talk about obscure, rare, old or popular movies or as long as you can create controversy for preferring certain styles over others you are absolutely golden!

/fa/shionable movies are movies you can wear like clothing. It makes so much sense.

it was about a couple that were into some weird sexual shit and would lie and manipulate ppl and just fuck with their heads for no reason

like the first bit they encouraged some random honeymooners in a bar to do a foursome

the dude raped and "murdered" his wife in the woods and pretended to be an actor after being picked up by the cops in suspicion to her murder
