I live in a small, but relatively important city for my country - only 365,000 or so in it, and most of that is made up of civil servants, other bureaucrats and university students - basically the useless detritus of any society.

Anyway, I've observed in my short time here, and extrapolated from these observations, that a likely significant portion of this population wears DM's.

They are either girls under the age of 18, or middle aged male lesser bureaucrats.

The grils all wear the boot variety - black and cherry.

The middle aged paper pushers wear the derbies - guess they just need a comfortable black shoe; don't blame them really, I'd want cushioned footwear if I had to stand around all day doing nothing of any importance.

It is so common, that when I came on here and read others' observations I had to laugh.

I wonder if the strange predominance of docs is because one of the only shoe stores in the city stocks them? Maybe the civil servants get a discount?

Dunno about the teenaged girls though; just following some worldwide trend I guess?

I can pull off docs pretty well, I think. I just recently ditched a thai pair of steel toed 1490s in favor of the UK made 1490s.

I look like Efrim Menuck and most of the comments I get regarding them are more positive or "curb stompers, fuck yeah," than anything really negative.

The thing is that they are/were marketed towards more niche "outsider" subcultures, and I think that association is still around at least when it comes to how males are meant to look when wearing them.

Basically if you're a clean cut femme you're not going to be able to pull them off all that well, at least that's what I think.

I haven't had the UK ones long enough to really form an overall opinion, but the asian made ones wore out really quickly after about a year and a half. I didn't care enough to pay to have new soles put in because it was a mistake going with the steel toes.

Also, semi-related, but the UK made industrial doc martens are amazing. I don't know if they still make them, I bought a pair five years ago from a second-hand shop and am just now getting the soles replaced (and even then it's just the heel that's worn down). Wore them every day for about three years when I was at a workshop. If you can find them, I rec copping them because they're damn well worth it.

this is the only correct part of your post and it's only half true. they were designed for comfort... in 1960. modern comfort designs have surely surpassed this and so yes they are for aesthetics

what pairs do you have? there is no way this is true.. the difference between the chinese and UK pairs is night and day. unless you get the nappa leather asian docs the leather literally feels like plastic. not only that but the chinese red and the UK red are completely different colors (cherry vs oxblood). not to mention the chinese soles wear out at least twice as quickly and are thinner to begin with
