Poor black culture. Back in their slave days, they didn't have no shoes, then they were poor and could only afford 1 or cheap shoes. If you had more than 1 pair, you was seen as making it, and if you had an expensive pair, that was even better. They alsos liked dancin' as seen from their capoeira to lindy hop to eventually break dancing. All that dancin wore out their shoes quickly and they always liked having a pair that was different from everybody else. Break dancing was also closely related to hip hop/rap music movements which were also deeply engrossed in sneakers as they were headed by mostly low income black people who loved to sing and dance! The sneakers were the shoe of choice for these new trendsetters. When the Air Jordans dropped, they were worn by one of the largest black icons in history, and although they weren't a hit at first, as his fame and accomplishment grew, so did his sneakers! Eventually everyone began to collect and wear all his sneakers and hoping to stand out from the rest, they wore other nike models and eventually other brands more than ever before. Nike picking up on this, released many different colorways and models to capitalize on their want to differentiate and other brands began doing this as well.
