the fact that it doesn't seem remarkable to you at all is testament to helmut's impact -- to the fact that the style of cut he pioneered here, and in his other collections, is now such a fundamental pillar of modern menswear. you've gotta put this in the right context:

helmut was an american sportswear designer at the very end of the twentieth century, working for a label which (at this point) was still independently-owned but competing with enormous financially-secure companies like calvin klein, michael kors, etc. you also have to recall that this was right in the middle of the "casual" movement -- where increasingly men were wearing the same outfits to work and to play -- and all of these labels were struggling to answer that demand for the clothes which you could wear to work and then out at night. this is the era that brought us "business casual," "smart casual," et al.

so what you see if you take a look at what these companies (and hl) were putting out then is their answer to that vacuum. go look at some of the late 1990s klein stuff, and some of the kors stuff, and then at lang. he's cutting suits with higher rises, slimmer legs, higher-cut armholes on the jackets, lighter, softer fabrics; they're more comfortable, physically, but you can also feel more at ease in them. alot of people parrot the sentiment in order to "fit in" with those of us who have been doing this for awhile (it's nothing to brag about, it's quite pathetic, ears of searching for labels but a 6/10 with a macy's credit card dresses better than you in the eye of the mainstream)

if i went into the closet, shook the dust off of a low arm hole produced in 1998, lang jacket and threw it up for $150 i'd have zero takers on tumblr

now look at what's fundamental to menswear today (or since 2005, when helmut left the helm of the company.) look at what you're taking for granted in this first post. these are helmut's victories -- and not even all of them (there's a whole different discussion to have here about his impact on the cut of jeans, which is of course one of the reasons prada took such a strong interest in him ... ) you don't recognize these suits because you see them every time you look at zara, lanvin, h&m, balenciaga, all of the labels who in turn owe to these, etc.

but there's another element here too. during the late 80s and 90s, lang was working right on this precipice of this enormous creative revolution in men's fashion. you can go back and take a look at these menswear designers who were considered the most avant-garde in the field at the time (rei and yohji are two easy examples) and the mens' stuff they're putting out is still unbelievably conservative compared to their womenswear. but here's a designer who's placing his mens- and womenswear on the same level -- in the same fucking clothes. designers who today are hailed as the menswear visionaries of that same era (raf, nicolas ghesquiere) all owe eons to helmut. to these collections. that's what's so special about it.

it depends entirely on the piece, as it does with raf. put a pyramid bomber on ebay and watch it go for 2000+ put a shitty knit from fw03 and you'll have a hard time making a sale.

if its a shit piece it won't matter too much if its OG Hl, tho ive seen plain black sweaters with armhole straps go for 200. however, put og HL bondage bomber on ebay and you'll sell it immediately for 1000+

same with hedi dior theres an inflation of mundane MiI and MiJ hedi era jeans that dont get a lot of pull but you'll sell eventually, but anything worth while particularly from luster and his other more celebrated collections and you can name your price.

reselling is bigger than ever and more and more people are becoming infatuated with designs and collections of the past. that probably has just as much to do with the weakness of contemporary menswear as it does the strength of the older pieces.
