here's what I do:

at the beginning of a season, make a list of essential cops. so for f/w this year you might really need to get your hands on rafdidas, a parka, some jeans, whatever.

determine another amount (based on your budget and how much you want to save) that will be spent on random shit, sale items, "limited" items, etc.

alternatively, you could just put away a certain amount of your paycheck into a savings account and forget about it. if you use direct deposit, talk to the people that handle it at your work, and have them split your paycheck up automatically.

ultimately, tho, it comes down to self control. also once you've been "in the game" for awhile, you realize nothing is really as cool as it seems. I mean what did everyone on /fa/ hype up a few f/w's ago? "timeless" pieces like pea coats and desert boots. no so cool now huh?

I am signed up for newsletters from every shop I could possibly be interested in. ssense, tres bien, maas stacks, end, oki-ni, ln-cc, mr porter, and more. at the beginnning of the season you get the deluge of new drops, and that's when you figure out what you want to cop. I have a pretty good basics built up now so I just find like five or so more "standout" pieces that I want.
