Yo nice one, graphic design here too (planning on starting uni in london next year). Seeing as I'm anon I'm gonna toot my trumpet. I was recommended not to do a foundation year because my portfolio is already at a professional level. But I'm shitting it for uni as I have no idea what to expect. All I want to do is get good grades this year, do uni, do industry then teach @ uni level.

But being recognized for my skill set is always very nice. I've been featured on typography served multiple times.

Problem with myself is that I'm not motivated to work. I've done a few quick freelance projects to get some cash for festivals and so on but client interaction is shit as 90% of the time they're utter cunts. I could've possibly made so much money the past few years and be spending it all on tricky ricky :(

Find stuff you like the look of and try to emulate it. Break it down to its essentials and built it back up from the bottom. Ofc do some tutorials to get the basics down, learn photoshop then learn design. Find something that inspires you and recreate it. Graphic design is one of the things where you don't need to be given lessons (as in school) but it sure as fuck does help being able to bounce ideas off people in real time, getting a second set of eyes to view your work. You can pick it up and freelance, same with web design and almost any digital skill. But those who have a 'classical' education will almost always be better (Due to experience).

Find an area you enjoy, and work on that. There's no use trying everything (but R&D never hurt anyone). Thankfully I'm fairly proficient with the whole adobe suite as well as C4D/Autocad and various others, the more you know the more you can use to get that outcome you want.

So to start get Photoshop and illustrator, do basic tutorial and copy what inspires you.

Saint martins is on my application too, but I've done jack all research about any of my unis. I really want to go to london, but living costs is mad expensive. So Norwich and Bristol are my cheaper options. But I've always loved london, whenever I've gone I could walk around for hours and never get bored.

As for foundation, I kinda want to go to industry as soon as possible. Uni is great as some companies hire straight out of unis. I've always been under the impression that foundation courses are for people who either don't have enough work to fill a portfolio OR are unsure which design path they wish to go down. Is this wrong?

foundation is mainly 2 help u get onto the degree course (sounds like u dnt rly need to) but if u choose diagnostic foundation u try out a bunch of different fields 2 help inform ur degree course choice
