I'll dump solid inspo later (wrong computer atm) but three questions for the hivemind:

1) How do Errolson Hugh's other projects (Stone Island Shadow, Disaeran, Herno Laminar) stack up to Acronym in terms of function and features? And what's the story on the latter two - I hear almost nothing about them, and Disaeran's website dates to S/S '12.

2) Are there any other companies that make stuff comparable in capability to Acronym?

3) I'm looking for a new fleece, and I want it to look/feel/be like a tech'd up classic '90s backpacker core thing. Any suggestions?

In before "why would you want to look like a backpacker." I don't, exactly. I want it as one element in fits.

IMO, the Flyknit Frees are the most aesthetic Flyknits, a very tall order – the Hyperfeels are closer to base of the Flyknit ethos, but the FF colorways are so much better.

I personally prefer flyknit trainer+ but frees are nowhere near as bad as people here are making them out to be. They do have flat soles but that's part of the shoes aesthetic and doesn't look as terrible/deflated as that one guy was making out. Maybe get a chance to see them in the flesh and see for yourself before you cop?

As for the people who say it's not 'technical' enough, fuck them. One of techwears roots/inspiration is sportswear and flyknits are great lower-end shoes IMO. Fuck, Acronym even uses flyknit shoes to model their own products sometimes (not the frees but you get my point).

Cotton is what most jeans are made out of, and it's not a great fabric for water repellency. Some brands treat cotton with water-resistant coatings, though. Merino is the best fabric for temperature regulation, and it dries out pretty fast too. Outlier has some good options for merino tees and weather-resistant pants. Although I don't really think one should be necessary - floating signifiers are just fine until some asshole starts arguing about them - I think I've come up with a pretty solid, encompassing, non-exclusionary definition of techwear.

The snippy version is "fashion congruent with its wearer's conatus."

The spelled-out version is "fashion that, through materials, engineering, and/or design ("tech") has functionality that helps the wearer live his or her life more than mainstream daily wear does, and makes at least some of its function visible, or at least touches on ideals related to things like striving, capability, dynamism, competence, athleticism, self-sufficiency, etc."

And "techwear" reserved for the aesthetic, "technical [x]" for fancy garments. Fashion/clothing distinction. Although if you get that anal in practice, you're an idiot.

The idea is: making plain and explicit what we're dealing with here, while reflecting the plurality of people and situations they find themselves in who could use a boost from their clothes, and without getting all exclusionary over, um, basic ass (>>7188061) price snobbery, or sub-style snobbery, or "[disparaged racial minority] wears that shit, ew" snobbery, or whatever.

These threads have been shitty lately, mostly because people have been talking way too much about whether x or y fits some reified "techwear" with a rulebook and completely losing sight of its foundation in function and human action. Hopefully we can settle this ITT? Any ideas?

Fitted techwear, easy, pic related, about as basic and universally accepted as it gets. And with full range of motion: the Patagonia baselayer is a 65/35 merino/polyester knit that stretches and it's got a great construction, and the Climbers and the Frode are built out of nearly identical nylon/poly/elastene softshell with four way stretch. Add a waist pack to make up for the slight pocketing.

>>7189621
Merino is the best fabric for temperature regulation in most environments, but it dries slow as fuck compared to polyester or polyolefin, and so they're a better idea when it's dangerously cold out and you'll be working up a sweat without going inside.

Their main downside relative to merino is that wool is naturally odor resistant and they pick up stench terribly, polyolefin worse than polyester. There's ways to try to engineer it out that most brand will do today, but they're never entirely effective and they can all be applied to wool, too.

Wool's main downside is its lack of abrasion resistance: it'll wear down very easily under friction.

Some other brands for wool gear: Ibex, Smartwool, and Icebreaker are the three big names in wool and athletic wear, producing full lines of wool clothing in a range of weights, blends, and styles. Patagonia produces ones blended with poly to balance out dry time and durability, like the one in pic related. Arc'Teryx has some solid wool options. Finisterre is a British surfing company, with an aesthetic exactly like you'd imagine from that, with a superb wool range.

All those companies make true, fitted wool baselayers, along with looser, more conventional, more fashiony options that wick and insulate less well, but breath better, so better for most summer activities. These companies just do conventional shirts, although the heavier weights will still insulate great and be inappropriate for hot weather, and they can still work well as a baselayer if compressed under other layers.

Isaora makes a full line of wool knit shirts in their io diffusion line, and offers some in their mainline. Filson, Woolrich, and Pendleton are all traditional outdoor companies making great wool shirts. Outlier, as previously mentioned, has a merino tee, but it's overpriced and underdone compared to most others out there. Their other merino offerings - a cotton blend dress shirt, a henley, a cardigan, a hoody, and some sweatpants - are all excellent.

And I forgot Rapha in the first grouping - I think they just do straight baselayers and a few jackets, but they're among the best. They've got these great summer baselayers that combine a poly mesh with merino. Mission Workshop and Chrome that >>7189621 also mentioned have some merino options, including great hoodys.

Sierra Trading Post usually has the best prices on straightforward merino tees and baselayers.

As far as the original question (>>7189591), that's pretty much what we're up to here. Default techwear guide at http://dressed-down.com/blog/2013/5/13/intro-to-techwear-part-1-the-bas

i ride my bike to uni in winter and need a mask thingy to protect my face against the cold wind.
Preferably something i can still breathe through, i use black tees atm and almost collapse every time i ride uphill

Why is techwear (usually) so devoid of colour? Most fits I've seen are just black (pic related) and it's pretty boring, anyone got any examples of more colourful fits?

if you just wear it when i bike it's no biggie imo. when you hop off the bike, pull it down to make it look like a gaiter round your neck.

That's something that annoys me, the technical aspect of the fabric should allow you to dress however you want and still stay warm and waterproof and for some reason people still default to NorthFaceCore
