I'm more on the architecture side of things so I don't really know that many designers. Have a look at Eames though- they were a couple that did really good things with moulding plywood in WW2 and went on from there, and they're particularly famous for the eames chair.

Speaking of which, you should get into chairs, It's one of the biggest areas of design our there and produces some really famous stuff. Mies van der Rohe (one of the most famous and best modern architects of all time) said something along the lines of "Designing chairs is harder than designing skyscrapers" . His famous chair is the Barcelona chair.

Also look at bauhaus. It started as a little design school in Germany and was eventually shut down by the nazis (but I think it was reopened post-war). Bauhaus is one of the most influential things to happen to design in the past hundred years. They especially pioneered in tubular steel.

Typefaces/ fonts are also worth having a look into, too.

do you really want to argue that those sleeve pockets are practical? They're not easy to get to, they're not able to store anything of significant weight (because you'll feel it tugging at your arm and pushing down the jacket on one side) and they're unable to store anything of significant bulk (not only will they bulge out, destroying the form of the jacket but those pockets are also likely quite thin). At best, you can store papers there but again, it's not an easy place to reach.
