mine was about that far away too. a lot of your experience depends on where you are and how your club's structured, but the actual flying is great.

I don't know if you have your power license or care about power flight at all, but glider flying is a lot more about the actual flying. much less meddling with radios or power settings or whatever. I heard from someone that one hour of glider flying is equivalent to twelve of power flight, and having done both I can attest to that. so it's a good way to get good at flying for cheap (way cheaper than power) if you want to transition later. if you can fly gliders I can almost guarantee that you will get your power license in the minimum time if you self study the systems stuff.

the people you meet will be dependent on your club but I've met some really interesting people. in my experience not the /fa/ demographic so don't join expecting patrick batemans everywhere. my club had a pumpkin drop for Halloween (giant target on the runway, lots of fun) and barbecues sometimes (I'm from Texas).

also, if you've got no flying experience, spend some time on microsoft flight simulator or something before you go. it'll help you a lot and you'll have a much better time if you don't need to spend flights learning what the rudder does, etc. even if you're not 100% sure you'll stick with it, buy a good joystick too.

A concert can be a great first date for a lot of reasons.
It gives you a chance to escalate physically quicker than a lot of other dates (holding her, dancing, being close etc). I know i've met girls at shows and went from not knowing her to full on making out in minutes. It's led to two GFs.

Also, if things aren't working out, it isn't as awkward because there are so many people around. If you already know you like the band it's really a win win, because even if the date goes bad, you got to see a band you like.

anyway just be nice to people, especially if they're volunteering, and ask people if they need help assembling their gliders if you see them doing it. they'll teach you stuff even if they don't let you touch it the first time (some of the fiberglass ones are worth more than my house I'm pretty sure).

also I seriously recommend the flight simulator. get microsoft flight simulator x, not the ms flight abomination. the pros use condor fs but msfs is more fun. I calculated it for power flight and even if you built a $1000 pc from scratch and bought a $400 HOTAS setup you'd STILL save money using the sim to practice. glider flying isn't that expensive but it still helps a lot.

yeah, that looks good. technically you don't need the expansion pack, but it's only 30 bucks and it's fun. plus if you're learning how to control the plane it doesn't matter too much what you fly because you'll learn either way.

as for the joystick, there's a lot of resources online, but basically there's a lot that will work. the most important thing is you pretty much need one with a twist grip for the rudder (you could get rudder pedals too but they're more expensive). don't use autorudder! and don't try to use your xbox controller or something. if you want to spend more to get one with more buttons or fancy sensors or metal parts or something, that's your prerogative. it's not necessary but I doubt you'll regret it.

anyway don't feel restricted to only flying the gliders because you may have more fun doing the missions and stuff and you'll learn either way. make sure the flying related realism settings are set to fully realistic though (gyro drift and mixture stuff isn't important).

also if you want to try something fun check out rise of flight. it's a free to play ww1 combat flight sim and the flight dynamics are among the best you'll find. plus ww1 planes are all bitches to fly so if you can master them you'll have no problem with anything else. I wouldn't recommend it as your only sim though, because that would be like learning to swim if someone threw you in a cold river and told you to catch fish.

p.s. for full experience on rof you want a stick with force feedback. it's not that important but I bring it up because if you find a microsoft force feedback 2 on ebay then you're set. fsx doesn't have ffb but it'll behave normally and it's still a really well built stick for around $50 or less. but they're old and you need to make sure you're buying one that works and comes with all the cables and stuff. like I said, not important but maybe worth looking into. I have one (as well as the x52 linked above) and I'd recommend both of them.
