What does /fa/ think of these?

Anyone own a pair of the (modern) Clarks Desert Boots?
How long have you had them? Have they held up?

It's approaching summer where I am so I'm looking at getting some summer footwear. Thing is, are the Clarks worth it? Or should I shell out some more (double+) for an offering from some other English companies like Loake, Grenson or Trickers etc.?
I understand that, generally, you do get what you pay for, but if the Clarks aren't too bad, well, the lower price makes it all the merrier.

>> No.7061924

db's for summer?

>> No.7061944

Got a suede pair that I wore for a year or so.

They tend to fit too big so you might have to size down.

They're really comfy, but the sole wears down fast.

Just get a beeswax pair and beat the shit out of them.

I was under the impression that their original use was for hot weather. Hence the name. Am I mistaken?

i just mean you pretty much have to wear pants with them so if its hot in the summer wont you want to wear shorts?

>> No.7061964

You definitely can wear them during the summer, but they don't work very well with shorts, they are still boots too so you arn't going to get a lot of ventilation for warm weather or anything

Thanks for your experience. So the soles wear fast? (I've heard that aboit crepe soles). Are they actually resolable? (not that it may be worth it, might be cheaper to buy a whole new pair).

I wonder if the inlimed suede would not be cooler than the beeswax?

Apparently high socks+shorts were the way to go.

While functional, I don't think you'd run around like a member of the british expedition forces in the 1940s

Clarks are an affordable staple of /fa/.

Mine are holding up just fine, comfy as fuck too. And yea, Clarks can be summer footwear. That's what they were originally designed for (well desert, but still hot weather).

i don't think the soles wear down particularly fast. and there are pictures online of people who have had them resoled

>>7061950
the name comes from the fact they were modelled after the desert boots worn by british troops in WW2

although you could wear them in summer if it's not very hot

They're good shoes for the price, especially as smart-casual summer footwear. They're not suited to wet weather, though, and they probably won't last more than 3 years. After 1 year, my laces disintegrated, and after 2 years, the crepe sole has worn completely through, and I'm now using duct tape to reenforce it.

aye if i grab a pair of these badboys can't i just put some waterproofing stuff on it (hydrophobic coating or something) to make it better for wet weather? we get some snow here in the winter, but only for like 1-3 weeks tops, usually it's just rain. i just need some dece lookin boots to last me a little while till i can cop some good ones but that might be a little while because idk when i'm gonna be working full time again and be able to afford them

The beeswax types seems the most popular.

I'm trying to figure out how this guy got that particular effect with the leather.

He's obviously worn them, hard, then applied some kind of wax, cream, oil or polish (or combination of such). I know that he's had them resoled with the ripple soles.

i think leather soles are real comfortable.
it takes a bit of getting used to

since unlike bending a pliable rubber membrane, or like a leather high heel in womens wear

you're responsible for flexing/wearing in a slippery , no grip, stacked leather and nailed system from like the 1800's but it works

the only problem with leather heels is that they make your shoes sound cheap when walking on cheap flooring in hallways

so your colleges, city halls, lower end department stores like macys with linoleum flooring
