In the Netherlands, people had the right to squat in a building if it was empty for a year or more. They put a stop to that law, but just before that companies started to profit from it. They would convince the owners of those buildings to pay them and they would rent it out for a low price to students and stuff so the building wouldn´t stay empty and fall into disrepair.
Now, the right to squat has been abolished, but these companies still exist cause it is a good way to give rooms to students and make sure that the buildings don´t fall apart.
Usually it´s a small rent and everything is included. In my case it´s about €300,- and that includes rent, electricity, gas and water.
This is needed because most of the time there's next to no insulation and you really need to stoke all day to keep it non-freezing.

pallets are made from scrap pine hence the splitting

the tumblr things are just staggered slats made to appear as if it were a pallet

traditional feet equipped and even most platform beds use 1X2 slats connected with cloth ribbon as a base for the matress

In the Netherlands we have a saying "ladderzat" which roughly translates to "ladderpissed" or "ladderdrunk".
In Utrecht you have the Domtoren (pic related) and there's this little room for some sort of clerical official. Now when they had people over in that room some of them would get properly shitfaced, there was no way you could let these people out of the front door of a church(tower). So they had a little ladder and when you where too drunk you had to go down that ladder if you wanted to get. That's where this saying comes from.

Moral of the story is: climbing ladders when drunk shouldn't be that much of a problem if even the late-medieval/early-modernity clergy could handle them out of a fucking church tower (that chamber is a bit below the first 'balcony').

butcher's blocks are the current trend
but it will die out soon, they have to continually be treated with linseed oil and sealed

most people don't want to do that.

most high end kitchens use butcher block becuase stone chips high end knives

and you don't want bespoke japanese hand made knives being chipped, especially when your sous chef is slamming them around trying to get some entry level shit plated

or.....

you don't want your mom coming over insisting she make a home cooked meal and throwing all your expensive shit around

THANK GOD FOR ALL-CLAD'S WARRANTY

In a way...

Ironically, Dutch Modern is actually kind of regressive; Other popular Modernist styles learned during the peak of the movement that once you take clinical modern ideals to their extreme, your space fails to fulfill the function of being a habitable living place for the humans it was designed for (pic related, though applied at a grander scale)

It's been my personal experience that Dutch modern is generally favored by people who haven't yet developed a deeper understanding of Modernism, its failings, and how to balance those failings out to create a successful result (such as Danish Modern)

It was just a throw-away comment but thanks for your response. I don't know anything about modernism but what you said does ring true.

Your pic reminds me of why your story rings true: I have a little apartment in a flat-building that has been build during the 1940s/1950s, just after the war. They where built to get something up fast and just to house a small family and still be as cutting edge as possible.
Now, they build these fuckers 4 or at a time with the exact same specifications, in the exact same street layout with surrounding streets that also have the exact same plans.
I have sometimes walked all the way up to the 3rd floor just to find out I'm in the wrong building.

You don't have a print lab? Buy some 13x19/17x22 paper and frames (or just custom fit one). Or go find a print lab and just pay them the $25 to print your photo.

I would have done this, but I frankly don't have anything I'd want on my wall. Nor do I have much wall space left after the gf starting putting crap up.
