It's an expression to make shitty, laughable clothing seem high class and artsy. Therefore, you can use it for almost any abnormal-looking fashion. The "abnormal" is important: Stuff like bad workwear and fedoras don't cut it. Simple bad taste doesn't suffice, it must be worse.

For example, imagine goof nigger, but add a psychedelic poncho in all colors of the neon rainbow, with high heeled whore boots instead of sneakers, on a male model with stubble, guyliner, libery spikes and feathers in his hair. One would be hard-pressed not to call that avant garde.

avant-garde is challenging the current standards by working against them and thinking outside the box.

then eventually some of those elements will be assimilated into the mainstream and the cycle continues.

It's basically just experimenting around and some of it will stick. That's it.

Rick owens is a good example of such a designer but many don't like him anymore round /fa/ cause everyone's dickriding rick for his shoes and hating on popular things(at least on /fa/) is cool and edgy as fuck.

I try to analyse and motivate my opions, but when it comes to art and design it gets hard.

Imo if you have a reason to create something new and experiment I'd like to think it is something positive, like exploring a new material or new technique or making something more functional etc.

A lot of avant-gard design feels forced because it does not push anything, it doesnt have a reason to be avant-garde, it more like a excuse to design something porely.

I want reason etc. for design I think, if there isnt a reason behind the design, why design.

When Rei and Yohji first debuted and brought their different aesthetics forward, that was the true "avant-garde", or, as directly translated, "before the masses". It was not a "new trend", but truly something new and confusing.

Nowadays I hate using the term, it sounds pretentious and is used by so many people to describe "unconventional" clothing to any degree. It's so vague and it's become another word like "aesthetic", it just sounds shitty.

I just use the term unconventional, and for something to be "avant garde" for me it has 2

1. be all black!!!!11!!!!!
2. leather!!!!1!!!1!!
3. drapes and ripped shit!!1!!!!11!!
4. oversized hoods and drop crotch!!1!!!
