Dear /fa/,

Not a regular here, but now that I've got a good paying job and plenty of money in the bank, there's something silly that I've always wanted to purchase.

A nice pair of stylish leather boots.

I'm thinking of getting a pair of Dr. Martens, along the lines of pic related. Would this be a fashionable choice?

If not, what would you recommend?

>> No.7005838

Doc Martens are generally played out as fuck. I don't know what sort of look or color you specifically want, but you can get much better if you have the money to spend. Red Wings should probably be your starting option

About the same look as that pic in terms of "height" or whatever you call the tallness of the shaft end.

I find that Rick's taller footwear works better the less subtle the detailing. I like the idea of the eyelets there, but compare it to the Plinth hikers and the eyelets work much better set into that proportion. Always liked the Mega Creepers (especially under mid-length things and sometimes even under shorts) and they can be scrunched a little, which gives you a little more wiggle room with the styling.

if you enjoy plastic looking leather, shitty chinese construction and a massive goofy looking tag, then go with the dr. martens

if you like good, high quality leather that'll look better as you wear it, good american construction and a boot that'll last you a life time with proper care and resoling.

now, people on /fa complain about them being clown shoes are skinny little twinks. if you are a normal size, or even /fit/, the boots will look normal on you

It's because /fa/ doesn't know what it's talking about 98% of the time when it comes to footwear.

Clown boot meme originates from three simple mistakes:

1) Photograph your boots from retarded angle. For some reason people always place to camera to the ground and photograph their boots almost upwards from ants point of view. It makes any shoe looks humongous.

2) 120lb teenagers who haven't grown to match their gigantic feet yet, and who also insist of wearing skinny jeans are usually the crowd who buy trendy boots and then post pics of them to places in 4chan.

3) /fa/ thinks bulky footwear is inherintly a negative thing and slim, light stuff is automatically desirable without having to explain it further. Obv this couldn't be further from the truth. Both have their style, place and purpose.

Take your pic of Ryan Gosling example. That is RW 1907 moc toe, pretty much as big as toe boxes get and they look perfectly fine.

but i agree with you. as long as you cop boots that are true to your size (meaning if your a size 9 dont get size 12) then youll be hard pressed to get clown shoes. unless you have much more strict definition of clown shoes. i personally cop all my shoes 1 size large (or brands that run large i cup the regular size) just so that they are more comfortable, and in the winter so i can wear thicker socks. now for actual boots that i want to wear for use (ie. hiking etc) they have to be true size to avoid blisters. and i dont think all my (barely) oversized footwear look like clown shoes, and nobody has ever told me that they look so. 6'2 size 11, idk if that ratio is smaller than normal. so...

Addison combat boots. Kind of a bitch to find new, but a guy on ebay (gordo116) has some. Went through 2 other sellers (one ran out of stock, other one was sketch and never shipped) before I was able to cop. Cheap as fuck too--around 60 shipped.

I actually bought these because he recommended them to me when I asked for suggestions! And no I have not. I showered with them on once but other than that I have just been suffering through wearing them. I've only had them a week though. Do you happen to have a link to where he talks about them?

Depends how you wear them. I've got some 10's that I've straight laced them messy, left the top three eyelets unlaced, and have them tied loosely so that I can slip them off and on. That way, you can just let your pant kinda fall into your boot. Tucking them in, lacing all the way up tight makes you look like some edgy militant kind of person.

Yeah the sole is the only thing keeping me from buying them, but they're made for ice and snow and for that terrain they're perfect. Also I think it creates an interesting dynamic with the clean, almost sophisticated shoe on top of a very techy, utalitarian sole.

They're $330 vs $130, generally higher quality, better laces.

They're modeled after WW2 paratrooper boots rather than having been updated periodically like Corcorans.
