It's definitely a lot more effective in motion than it was in stills. I think that ties in well with what seems to be Rick's vision lately, 'clothing in motion', rather than the monolithic stoicism of his earlier work. He seems to going after more practical cuts that play off the movement of the body rather than obscure it, so in that sense it's only natural that he would opt out of the traditional walking models to show off this collection. He wants people to see it move.

Also, I think it's hilarious all the posts that people have posted about how he's exploiting them, even if it's with good intentions, e.g. how he's going to have a windfall profit because of this. Black college students aren't going to start suddenly buying $3k jackets (anymore than they already do if they're rich or like following fashion-buzzy musicians or whatever). >fashion shows have never been about the clothing

I think this is a REALLY good point. We're ages past the age of slow, stately defilés with models holding cards and press/buyers taking notes and placing orders then and there.

The fashion show as it exists now is now not just about product (though that is still its ostensible purpose), but also about image, visibility, performance, and so much more. It's not surprising how many smaller, contemporary brands opt for presentations or just showroom appointments or why Alaïa has just opted out of the calendar altogether.

For me, I like the show because it emphasizes the point that Rick's clothes, for all their extravagance and outlandishness, are still clothes that move and work and allow you to actually live your life. The following is from an interview with 032c:

>"I was always irritated that radical fashion was just for the shows, and when designers would present women as decorated parade floats going down the runway, then show up in the end to bow wearing jeans and a T-shirt. These designers wouldn’t commit themselves to their own aesthetic, and I’m irritated every time I see it. They make a proposal, but they imply that it’s impossible for it to really happen."

For me, the shock of the stepping and the snarls and attitude are secondary to the fact that these girls could do any of it in the clothes in the first place. What's the point of looking great if you have to stand still like a statue and can't actually do anything? For all the bravado and theatrics, at the end of the day, these are clothes that you can wear and proof positive that clothing can help you be the person you want to be.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with affectation or posturing or fantasy. Many people look to fashion for an idealized form, for the chance to become something different, something new. And that is absolutely, one hundred percent fine. That's a completely legitimate expectation for fashion. The duo at Meadham Kirchhoff use fashion as a lens to revisit and re-imagine history, Victoria Bartlett at VPL designs clothes that impose a futuristic (and sometimes unrealistic) order on her models, and Iris Van Herpen uses the wide berth allowed a couturier to make clothes that explore new perspectives on beauty in a world that sometimes sorely lacks any. But these designers understand that their clothes are not for everybody and that they are after a specific person and that, often times, their pieces are thought experiments more than actual clothing.

I really like the whole "waiting in an airport lounge" scene he depicted. It felt authentic, living and just very well-done. I particularly like the way every models had his own story, stories who could intertwine. And despite all of that, it didn't forget his place, as afterall it was a fashion show and succeeded at showing the collection. It struck a good balance between the show and the fashion. Meanwhile the RO show was 20 fat dancers who did a shitty choreography, wore ill-fitting clothes (because they were fat) and had not much going on for it besides the name of the brand carrying them. You can def draw a parallel between the show as both of them tried to portray Life. A scene of life for AMI, men waiting for their plane to come, men waiting for someone to arrive at their destination, men working there. Meanwhile, it was much more primal for Rick but that's all it was. It even forgot to show us the clothes. And fascist and the others can talk all they want, but it is not a show, it is a fashion show. Forgetting it is a fault. As a show it was good, but in the end, as a fashion show it was ultimately faulty.

So yeah, they both had the same exercice to realize and show to the world and AMI did it ina much better way.

i dunno i feel like maybe we differ here, I think runway/lookbook shows or whatever don't really need to be shows of the actual clothes anymore, what with the proliferation of websites and other media (along with brick and mortar shops as always) where you can see what the clothes look like on a hanger - I feel that shows now can be (I originally typed 'need' to be but corrected myself) another... extension of a brand, so the performance acts in a similar to haute couture shows, in that it's not what everyone's going to be doing while wearing the clothes, but it gives an aura, and adds value to the brand or whatever.

This is pretty incoherent but whatever.

The storyteller par excellence in my book really is Umit Benan, which isn't to say that Mattuissi isn't good at what he does. He makes clothes for guys who like fine things, but would never be accused of being a snob, which is a pretty hard balance; luxury against insouciance. But these are different guys (girls) and they live different lives. I know there are guys who like being in an airport/at the DMV/waiting for a bus in a tailored pant, but I think there are also guys who approach travel in a different way.

I just don't understand why one has to be "better" for you. They aren't the same customer, so why should the shows be the same?

To people who are saying the fit is perfect; it's not.

To people who are saying that's a huge problem and shows that the show was a disaster; I can't imagine how much work it was (given that the Rick Owens in house design team is, like, three people) to prepare samples for thirty-nine women in a short period of time and given the restraints of time and manpower, it's pretty remarkable that the fit is as good as it is.

Both positions are silly and don't take into account the realities of a runway show.

Not impressed.

The look is aight, and I understand the interest in both creating a show and showing that the clothes hold up even when worn by fat chicks do crazy movements, but really, it was bland.

The show was the only thing that provided life to this, the garments didn't speak on their own.

Seriously, it was just bland. None of the garments stuck with me, impressed me or even caught my interest.

Meh, only 10/10s I can think of must be Gareth pugh Fall'11 rtw, Hermès Spring'11 rtw and Balmain's whole Fall '13 lineup. Nut that's me.

But the show focused more on showing off fat black bitches dance than the clothing; it ended up feeling like the designer wanted to do a fake "celebration" of the women than actually showing off his craftmanship.

I just didn't feel it, and I personally hate it when too much of the focus is removed from the clothes.

It's like CGI trailers for videogames; it looks nice and all but it's not really what I'm looking for. I follow fashion for clothes, not all the other bullshit.

If you can't let the clothes speak for themselves then it just feels wrong.

I thought so, to, but then poet unpacked it one time in a post. Very loosely paraphrasing:

Rick's said the collaboration and design came about because as he's getting older, he's having to start doing cardio/running to stay healthy, instead of just lifting. So, running shoes.

Problem is, what Rick likes in sneakers - big, heavy, clunky sole - and what's good in running shoes - light, flexible - are at odds. So what does he do? Splits that thick, clunky sole in two, leaving no sole where the foot needs to bend, both working functionally and playing off both clunky soles and the rippled-up running soles we see a lot today.

Not my personal cup of tea, but then the only Rick sneakers I really love are Geobaskets, a little, just because they're so well executed, and Island Dunks, a lot.

Anyway, yeah, the Rickdidas? I don't like them, but I can really dig the cleverness and brilliance of them as design objects.

And the show? Perfect Rick, maximum Rick. There was a line in the Tim Blanks review where he talked about the show embodying a "gentle notion... with a sledgehammer force," and I can't think of a better summary of Rick's aesthetic generally. And I liked the clothes, better than some of his recent collections.

this whole idea of "letting the clothes speak on their own" by having tall, skinny white women walk down with a stupid looking scowl and dumb waddle is a preposterous lie. its just as distracting, if not more so because it keeps fashion bland and all about glamour and bullshit. runways just serve to get plebs interested in big houses so that they'll buy their perfumes and bags and shit at the mall. that's not what rick is about. i guess he's tired of pandering to buyers. he can make it on his own anyways.

runway shows shouldnt even be considered important, the whole idea of fashion week is just catered towards making money and keeping the designer from having true creativity. i think yohji said nowadays its 99% about selling out, and 1% about having actual creativity and freedom to design. and look at yohji's recent shows, as well as his daughter. they're terrible. now look at yohji 20, 30 years ago and he was brilliant.
