6932275 No.6932275 [Reply] [Original]

I really like this watch, even though it's a cheap 25$ timepiece. I have a problem, though: the name on it blows and I am not really comfortable when other people check my wrist and see that name on my watch.

The glass is flat. (I like the flat glass, because it's harder to get scratches on it)
Everything works on it, except the seconds hand, which now works as a gravity direction indicator. Watch has nice weight.
Glass: 35 mm. Watch: 52 mm.

I am looking for something of similar design to this, but from a well-known brand. (which presumably will be made out of higher quality materials)
I don't care if it has leather or metal strap.

Can you anons recommend something?

Thank you in advance!

So you want a chronograph
And you're one of those retards that keeps the chrono running 24/7 because you don't realize the small seconds counter exists

I recommend a digital watch that way you don't fuck up

On the off chance you learn to not be retarded get a Rolex Daytona or zenith el primero or omega speedmaster

This is kinda horseshit and fnudamentally an opinion which comes down to preference.

Anon has decided sub-$200 watches are "good enough" for daily use/beating. For your in-house automatic or mechanical actions, hand-crafted precision he says you must spend above 5k.

In between $200 and 5k he clearly believes that the premium Quartz stuff and mass-produced automatic actions just aren't worth it. That's fine for him. I think he's wrong but to each his own. Why do I think he's wrong? Because a $6000 IWC action *is* good. I just don't think it's $5000 worth of better over a $1000 watch with an ETA movement. But again, to each his own. One day I would like a luxury watch, but that's just me.

Listen, its like buying a Lexus. Or one of those "special" "luxury" Hyundais. To anyone that knows cars, you look like a tool.

To anyone in the know about watches, a Tag or Omega, or Timex, or anything else in that 200-5000 range fits into the faux luxury category. I wouldnt be caught dead in one. Youre better off with no watch at all.

Bullshit. A classic JLC MasterControl is about 4k. A Speedmaster which is one of the most iconic watches goes for around 3k. Then you have smaller brands like Nomos which provide inhouse movements and fantastic design for even less. If buying used, the 3-5k range is maybe the most value for money you can get.

Also nothing wrong with getting a used sub (although I'd rather get the new explorer II)

>> No.6933231

Thinking of paying for a mid range Seiko. What's a good lineup? The chronographs/solar any good?

>> No.6933270

>>6933189
I wouldnt get the JLC. The only decent Omega is a man on the moon, i assumed that if you knew about it, youd know that that exception always exists.

Anyway, if your spending over 200, id only bother with Patek, Jeager, Blancpain, Breuget, Vacheron, and Cartier. Used it fine if you can get it for less than 5k but you get what you pay for.

>> No.6933301

>>6933231

Solars are good and chronographs an be fine.

All in all Seiko is good. If you want god-tier value for money and automatic action, get the SKX0007 (or something like that) it's a 200m water resistant watch with an automatic movement and luminescent hands. Pretty face and bezel, too. If you like bright colours you can also rock the Orange Monster.

That would be my personal recommendation, but to be honest there's just so many options :)

GUys, that might sound retarded but

Do you know a watch like this, but with numbers ? BEcause I just can't read that right without them. Although the style is exactly what I like.

>> No.6933330

>>6933270

Well dude you just said you wouldn't get the JLC. There's no justification for that. Is it good? Yes. Is it fucking god-tier awesome? Fuck, I don't know. What's the gap between $5k and $15k to be honest? A lot of the time you're buying prestige. Oh the mechanics and labour and mastery are good... but probably enough to merit that kind of price tag. For the purchasing of status first and nifty technology second it's definitely true. But again it's kind of moot because like it or not, quartz is more accurate. Moreover you can't offer blanket statements like "Omega is bad" without offering any kind of reason aside from "muh moniez let me buy more attuned ones." What's wrong with them? They aren't Rolex or Tag Heuer or IWC to be sure but they're damn fine timepieces.

Meanwhile the budget brands you listed are good... but range on the high side of that massive curve. I don't think OP or the people interested have that kind of money.

And to be honest what's wrong with an ETA or Japanese movement on a nice case for less than a single k? I can't think of one and the only one you can provide is "muh technology"... even if the gap in 'superior' ones aren't worth the exponential increase in price.

Cry about it all you want, but even as an "appreciator of mechanical movements" there's nothing making a Swiss movement more magical than a Chinese one... aside from the increase in cost of labour.

I think youd be better off getting a JLC Reverso. Just imo.

Anyway yeah, you are paying for prestige. Thats the point of a pointlessly expensive watch. You pay for a beautiful movement and a name.

But that isnt the problem. The problem is paying $1000 for a $50 watch because it says Omega on it. You can get the same cheap movement and better looking for less. Its frankly a waste of money.

I dont say these watches are bad because theyre less expensive. I say it because their TOO expensive for what they are.

Nothing is wrong with a cheap watch. Nothing is wrong with ETA or even Quartz. The problem lies with the mock luxury brand attached to it.

Tell me to cry all you want. Im trying to warn you that buying a TAG is a bad idea. In the end its still a cheap watch. You just overpaid. Take a look at the resale value on TAGs and Omega if you think their worth more than a cheaper watch.

>> No.6933454

>>6933431

Ah, OK. If what you're arguing is it's TOO expensive for what it is without the actual prestige value then I'd say you are largely correct. I'm actually not bitching you out on this as I tend to agree. I like automatics-- it's just the ones I buy are under $300 and include Russian, Japanese and now Chinese-made models.

I do agree $1k for false-prestige is too much and may as well go all the way to 5. However, I think there are legitimately some brands in there such as Nomos with interesting pieces, it's just you're not getting the prestige when you buy them. I also happen to be a fan of some ETA movements but not the price tag-- hence why I like watches like the $300 Maratac on a Japanese movement and a case with tritium lume that can have the shit kicked out of it and still work.

So yeah I think the only reason we disagreed was incomplete phrasing.

Just to be sure, was your watch originally a working chronograph?
>the seconds hand, which now works as a gravity direction indicator
It sounds like the friction fit of the second hand is a little loose. This would merely require some pressure to push it further down on its axle. If you'd like, I can give you instructions on how to do this.

>the name on it blows and I am not really comfortable when other people check my wrist and see that name on my watch.
