I can't post it online without blurring everything and then at that point it wouldn't look much different from a drivers license. I feel like it wouldn't help.

Basically, when I was 20 I enlisted the military as an intelligence analyst and I finished my degree in engineering while I was in. I got out of the military and applied at a bunch of engineering companies but I didn't want to do soul crushing work like increasing the efficiency of transistor architectures. I had a buddy who got out and went to a gov't agency and he put in a good word for me. I had a degree, experience and a clearance so it wasn't that hard to get in. I also make more as an intelligence analyst than I probably could've as an engineer. I've been doing it for about 4 years now and I like it. If you don't believe me that's fine, but I'm telling the truth as I have no reason to lie on an anonymous imageboard.

I try not to think of higher education as an employment agency. I really don't like the inhuman, overachieving monoculture of "top preschool - top grade school - top high school - top college - good job".
That whole preparation trip is a big thing with middle-upper class parents here in NYC. There are people spending their entire youth in what is essentially Job Training. Everything is about that job you're going to get, because that job is your ticket, your life raft.
Why does it have to be this way? Money comes and goes, and if you know how to hustle and use your head you will always be able to get your hands on the dosh. I know kids on the perfect career track who are basically walking resumes. Their whole life has led up to this job. It's just... Ugh.
Enjoy your youth, study what truly interests you (if that's STEM? go for it!) and learn things for yourself. The reward of higher education is not a 9-5. It never was. The whole exercise is about learning to open your mind and see things differently. Learning to think and speak and write. Becoming better all around.
Salary shouldn't be you raison d'être in school. I know people with High School diplomas making legal money to the tune of 800K annually, with a minimum of work. They do it by owning land.

Competition is as strong as ever in college, that's why there's such a big emphasis on STEM (especially on 4chan) because no one wants to blow off money by the thousands with a useless art degree and work in some shitty job to help pay it off. "follow ur <3 n u can be anythn u want :)))" and "do what you love" is hardly applicable with such a gigantic fucking population and the influx of students from China/India and over-saturation in general. That's why you have so many students that are showing to these top paying employers that they are loyal enough to bust their asses off for 4 or 5 years.

>how 2 find a college that wants me to learn, and doesn't just want me to throw money at them

if you aren't sure, don't. it's not worth your time and money if you don't feel you can right now, if ever. if you want to go to school but can't afford it, work and save up for your most fitting school-don't compromise, or at least find one that's really in tune with who you are and is still financially effective.
this is an issue i'm really struggling with right now as a college freshman going to a fall-back of a fall-back of fall-back for the sake of cost. i came here instead of burrowing myself in debt going to my 'dream school' i was accepted to and am kicking myself for it-honestly, the mental toll right now of being here isn't worth the lack of expense. they don't give a shit about your education and it's incredibly, incredibly isolating. i'm studying what i love and have for at least a year and a half on my own time but even then the day-to-day is incredibly difficult; the only thing really driving me right now is the fact that after a two year point i can transfer out and really dig my teeth into my work in a place that is much more suited to who i am. i'm sorry if that sounds whingy or pessimistic, but being at a place you can't stand with no really accessible way out is a kick in the mouth, especially when they're making you pay for it.
take as much time as you can afford and look around, talk to students, tour the campus but tour the city and know the environment, stay for a week or two. make sure it's the best possible fit and be prepared. don't rush into such a major decision because of money concerns, or famlial pressure. i caved to both and it's not a fun ride.

if you don't want to go to school, look into real estate and land dealings. however, if i were you, i would take a year and travel and just really embrace being young-i wish i did.

Nope. Land in certain areas is the safest investment. Its value increases with inflation. Nobody's making any more of it. Historically, landowners are the ones who climb the ladder or sit at the top. Always have been.
Having rental property is like having a racehorse that never quits. Day after day, your tenants get up and go to work so they can pay you. They're holding own a job so you don't have to.
It's really the best deal you can get these days.

As someone with some Dutch in the family you should know better. :^)

I get your point though, I guess I'm just a bit wary of using past results as a measure for the future. It seems to solid, a bit too solid but that might just be unfounded paranoia.
How would you even get into land-owning? That stuff is ridiculously expensive, I can't even imagine ever getting enough money to even get a house for myself without huge debts.

Sorry for the interrogation anon, I would really appreciate it if you could answer me though. :)

I started undergrad thinking I wanted to follow a pre-med route. I did pretty good, getting a 3.9, but wasn't enjoying anything about my classes or the people I was taking them with. I switched to Psych knowing that going for a graduate degree was necessary in every way. Went the counseling route since I loved the experiences I had in therapy when my life felt like shit.

My GPA was in the 3.8-3.9 range throughout undergrad. I'm very much an introvert and my lack of vocal participation in a lot of classes gave me the A- grades that brought my GPA down.

I was on good terms with all of my professors and made efforts to help them with research. I've been helping a professor with lit reviews and data collection for one of her current studies since last October.

I'm terrible at making friends, but I'm agreeable and can get along with just about anyone, so making acquaintances among fellow classmates was never a problem.

The money I make right now isn't anything special, but I live alone with a relatively meager lifestyle, and didn't shoot myself in the foot with loans in undergrad (dem housing expenses).

Going to get the ball rolling on doctoral programs in the next few weeks.

>> No.6924426

Good for you man, and thanks for the reply. It really helps.

My first year was pretty average, and though it is 'only 1st year', I already regret it and am absolutely making ten fold the effort this time around.

That's comforting to know about the friends thing, I'd say I'm ambivert, bi-polar even sometimes. I go through stages of being extremely elated for no reason for hours on end. The comedown is equally as magnificent. So I too, find it rather difficult to make friends. I'm my own worst enemy.

Never done counselling myself but it's something I've been thinking about more and more, recently. Would you recommend it?

Dem housing expenses indeed. I have cheap rent but I blow my loan on other shit, headphones, guitars, GTA v... to name a few... gonna have to stop doing that also!

Best of luck with your not so distant future! Exciting times for you.
