>tfw there are actually people out there that don't understand why people wear watches other than to look cool.

It pisses me off so much to see how the average /fa/ user has no fucking clue about watches and only sees to value either shitty fashion watches or only the extremely expensive high end brands.

Anyways...

What is your watch /fa/?

Anything that belongs to a fashion company is plebtier.

>Fossil
>Calvin Klein.
>D&G etc. etc.

All those watches are overpriced pieces of shit that use cheap quartz movements and cheap materials to imitate something expensive.

The first rule should be:

>Never pay more than 300 dollars for a Quartz watch that uses batteries.

There are pretty good brands out there but these watches cost around 500 dollars to 1000 dollars.

>Certina
>Frederique Constant
>Tissot
>Stowa (really nice brand actually)
>Hamilton.
>Movado
>Longines.
>Oris.

Remember it's ALWAYS better to save up for the watch you want than to compromise. Watches are actual investments and will outlast almost everything in your wardrobe except a good pair of shoes.

>> No.6893640

A Quartz movement is cheap as fuck to manufacture, that's why you can buy a Swiss Made watch with some ETA Quartz movement for 30 bucks.

Quartz watches are not worth more than around 300 dollars, if you pay more than that you are actually paying for the brand and the design, nothing else.

A good ETA movement is worth that much as you said, you could probably buy a nice automatic watch for 400 dollars, but the value of the movement only goes up depending on how well it's made, the complications that are on the movement and all the in-house mods that they made.

See what I mean? A Quartz watch reaches the maximal value around 300-400 dollars based on the complexity of the watch, a good automatic only goes up until you could only afford one if you are a millionaire.

on a 400 dollar watch, how much do you exactly expect it to appreciate?

Appreciation of a watch goes beyond just the movement... but what the hey, hate on quartz movements all you like. They're still better at time keeping than most automatics. That's a fact.

If you can afford a good mechanical then by all means go for it, but it doesn't really make a real difference till you're hitting that 5 figure sum.

You are misunderstanding my post.

I like quartz watches, they are extremely accurate and durable. But I hate Quartz watches that way overpriced because of how the watch looks.

Like some Tag Heuer watches with quartz movements that cost around 2k. That's just scamming the costumer, since you are paying for the brand alone.

I love watches with automatic movements because of the movement in itself, the way those work and watching it work fascinates me.

Mechanical ETA2824 costs like 50 bucks. Same with equal grade Miyotas such as 9015. Not to even mention Russian and Chinese entry mechanical that cost half of that.

With your logic you could just as well say "If you pay more than 200 bucks for ETA2824 watch you're retarded". For those who don't know, watches with this movement go up to 2 grand.

Also, some quartz movements are marvelous and from engineering point of view much more impressive than standard mechanical movements. Seiko 9F, Citizen movement they use in Chronomaster which name I don't remember, Breitling Superquartz..

Anyway, it's usually sign of somekind pseudo-enthusiast of babbys first time getting into watches if all they do is go on about how watch has to be mechanical and quartz=bad etc. Like some wise man in TZ-UK once said, "appreciating of quartz is a sign of WIS maturity".

Oxymoron. This is a "feature" designed to sell to people who shop based on a checklist of "features". There is almost no justification for a hand winding automatic, for that matter there's hardly any justification for "hacking" movements in the age of quartz.

It's like people who want functional buttonholes on a cheap chinese made RTW suit. All it does is give them something to charge you more for on a low margin mass produced product.

Apply yourself son. Is "I donate books" something you can wear on your wrist?

There's a company that turns your dead loved ones into diamond. Think of how many poor children it would take to make a diamond studded wristwatch. I bet it would be less than 100.

well, he needs a new crystal, band and it probably needs a servicing.

so in that condition the watch is worthless, and when he's done, it's worth 70% of the money he put into it

faux gold case plating is a little passe' even in the 1970's.

and the case diameter is really too small to wear nowadays. i'd just throw it in a box with pics of your grandfather and leave it be

>so in that condition the watch is worthless, and when he's done, it's worth 70% of the money he put into it

It's his grandfather's watch. I know you value yourself based on how many law firms your dad has (was it 3 or 4, I forgot), but some people actually have a relationship with their family and things like inherited watches have significant personal value.

>faux gold case plating is a little passe' even in the 1970's.

Unless you're examining it at close range nobody is going to be able to tell gold plated from gold filled from solid gold, and even if they could they wouldn't care unless they were appraising it for resale value. Most people who aren't totally superficial scumbag SoCal types would see a guy wearing a watch like that, and either think nothing of it, or they'd think it was neat that he was wearing his grandpa's old Omega.

>and the case diameter is really too small to wear nowadays

depends

Much of the added worth of an automatic is justified by the appreciation of the enthusiast wearing it

servicing every 5 years can be a pain, but I wouldn't bother on a watch that cost less than 2k - so dw about that

aesthetically, it's surprising how much nicer a sweeping hand is than a ticking hand, and if the watch has an exhibition case-back, there's a lot of beauty in that feature

I say if you like the design enough that you see yourself wearing it for at least a few years - get the automatic, you'll appreciate it more and take better care of it (I'd assume). It will feel more authentic.

>little anecdote
I sat on the tram this morning next to a guy in a business suit wearing a $6,000 JLC, so I complimented him on it and we struck up a conversation about automatic watches. I was wearing a $200 jap made orient, but the prestige didn't really matter at the time, it was our shared appreciation for something most others don't get/don't care about... it was nice.

TL;DR - yeah, probably.
