/fa/, what is an ideal size for a wardrobe to you? i'm getting ready to do an overhaul on mine, and I'm curious as to what everybody thinks is the ideal amount of clothing.

do you think that having only say 7-8 tops, a jacket or two, 2-3 bottoms, and maybe 3-4 pairs of shoes is too little? would having to wash them that much affect their quality quicker?

If you‘re too unsure about it just opt for the basics. What you said is a mid-tier wardrobe. Check the sticky, it says a lot about it. No. Don‘t check the sticky, it not very useful. Check MFA‘s sidebar and guides. I know, MFA is shit as a comunity but their guides are times better than /fa/‘s sticky.

In my case, If I was going to overhaul my wardrobe I‘d choose two OCBDs (blue and white/gray), a nice dress shirt (white), a navy blue suit, raws, one pair of brown bucks and a pair of black oxford shoes. As for the accesories the most important is gonna be your hair. Don‘t get a HY. It looks stupid, instead ask for a manly as fuck haircut (a real men should never show his cranium). Other must-have acc is a brown and black leathet belt, a nice silver, if not, titanium watch and two or three pair of sunglasses.

If you have all the above you are good to move your way into experimenting with colors, patterns and such. Hope it helped.

i'm not new to fashion, i just haven't come across a lot of discussion about minimal wardrobe size and wanted some opinions.

you would say this is middle?

>> No.6859457

In time I would like to go for a smaller wardrobe (I'm slowly trimming it down right now) - it encourages me to be more thoughtful with my purchases and committed with my fashion.

I'd rather have a small selection of high-end clothing than a larger selection of lower end clothing personally.

I'm not saying that's the right way to go for everyone though - it really depends on how much variety you want.

Whatever you do - don't ever buy shit that hardly matches with anything.

Two pairs of sneakers, a pair of black derbies, and a pair of black boots.
5 pairs of pants
10 or so black, grey and white t-shirts, one or two white button-ups
6 to 8 coats
Some scarves and a hat or two
That's all I'd really need

thank you op

i really want to know how large mine should be

i like numbers and i like definition and i don't like excess

ultimately i think it'll depend on what i (or you) do for a living

if you work at a formal place, you'll need a diverse fleet of shirts, of course, and fewer tees

Well, I'm including knits under coats
So like 2 knits, one cardigan one black sweater
1 or 2 leathers
a big-ass wool coat
a black rain jacket
then two blazer-esque jackets
Guess a hooded sweatshirt couldn't hurt either

yeah, that's the other thing. currently I have to dress business casual where I work, which doesn't necessarily fit in with the rest of my wardrobe either (at least in a traditional sense). i definitely don't want weird looks from my coworkers or supervisors about wearing the same thing 2, maybe 3 times a week.

It's actually good advice.

I was in a similar position 2 years ago; threw everything away --save for underwear and started from scratch with little purchasing power, and by little, I want you to picture a broke student full of ambition being harshly awakened by a ruthless price tag named Mr. 45 Euros.

I started buying a few 15 Eur tees, a pair of decent jeans and realized I had to do some planning. I view any wardrobe as a combination of:

>Core
Tees, shirts, pants, shoes, underwear.
>Essentials
Coat, bag, scarf, suit
>Superficial
Watch, wallet, that really weird pair of pants that won't be wearable in 1 year but you still want to buy, jewels, etc..

*You can't go out without wearing core.
*You can live without essentials but some situations and circumstances require them (winter, job itw).
*Forget about superficial until core & essentials are done.
*See this as a business and each piece is your employee.
*As a rule of thumb, upper body pieces brings the variety. You can buy 2/3 Uppers for each Lower.

The strategy I adopted was to buy the cheapest correct Core elements and buying slightly better quality essentials. Some key pieces that you can wear regularly and don't get used up easily are to be prioritized. (tees & jeans have the best ROI in all my wardrobe).

The last advice I can give is learn clothes hygiene. I see here people complain about jeans not lasting 6 months. Bullfuckingshit. I bought a pair of raw slim jeans (25 Eur, Zara, summer sale) 2 years ago, I wear them all the time and only the color slightly changed. They still look cool as fuck. Learn to iron and fold clothes, hand-wash them, don't spray you nutella greasy fingers all over them, fold them. One employee from a luxury boutique in Paris thought they were Dior and tailored. Fucking lol.
FIT > Quality >>> Style/Color/whatever > Brand name
For shoes and suits, quality and style weigh more in the overall result. But for basic pieces, Fit all the way.

here's the most important tip I can give you about an overhaul:

don't overhaul all at once. build your wardrobe one piece at a time. you will make better purchasing decisions if you approach it this way.
