there are teirs for the duffle coat, all of them based on price
the $100-$200 range are awful looking and probably don't perform very well, either because they are not down filled or because too much synthetics were used.
$200-400 range can perform pretty well, like canada goose. still some synthetics being used but the down is usually real/natural, but the majority of these don't look very nice. no harm in owning one but don't expect to be styling

$500+ can get you something stylish with real down and decent construction, the more you pay here usually results in nicer build quality,

I just realised you asked about duffel coats not puffer jackets, what the fuck am I doing. well whatever.

down is the shit. I own a wings+horns down jacket in tweed, you don't sweat balls because it's not synthetic, but you can keep warm in it in arctic temperatures.
it's rare that I even get a chance to wear it here in canada, but when it is that cold, I'm the comfiest motherfucker for miles.

yeah I've been asking myself that too, especially after looking into primaloft. specifically this jacket

it's not something you realize until you experience owning a down jacket how almost unnecessarily warm it is, and how puffy it is makes it awkward for anyone who doesn't actually plan to keep on it and stay outside for the duration of the day.
if I get a chance I'll buy this jacket and compare the two, primaloft looks undoubtedly much more breathable and versatile.

Burton/Element stuff that you find at a TJ Maxx or whatever never has a modern, contemporary cut like an Isaora or Arcteryx Veilance. This is blatant misinformation.

Eddie Bauer INVENTED the down jacket. You can go to their website and pick out one you like for under $300.

Down jackets for over $1000 is just an example of finding a niche market (in this case, "people who will spend $1000 on a down jacket"). Price =/= quality

it's a misnomer to believe the inventor is always at the front line of quality.
and I made the distinction that higher up in price reflected a nicer aesthetic as well as more natural building materials like wool, which is a personal bias I hold to as I know how gross you end up feeling if you wear a nylon lined down jacket, I also just prefer how natural materials look over synthetic ones.
lastly, price has baring more in style than anything else, you will pay over $500 to look nice if you want a down jacket, or you'll pay $300 to look like you want to be warm and don't care for anything else superfluous

find a down jacket with both under $500 and I'd be genuinely impressed.

>and i made the distinction...anything else superfluous
In this section, you're basically saying "I will pay more for a jacket if I like it." No one is saying that's wrong. Style is ultimately about personal taste, first.

MY point is that a good down jacket can be acquired for much less money than that anon mentioned. In this moment, I just wanted to raise objection to the idea that one has to spend $800 to get a quality piece of clothing. Because it just isn't true.

I dunno WHAT you guys are talking about, peacoats are snuggly as fuck and people have, on several occasions, asked me where they could buy them.

I wanna know, what does /fa/ have against them? Pretty much all my real life experience has been the opposite of what /fa/ feels about them.

That's because you hang around with poor people. People who don't have enough money to buy a good coat buy a peacot, or wear a fedora on their often quite gargantuan head.Unless you're a captain of the seas, it makes you look like a retard and retards aren't /fa/, comprende?

Okay, but I want a little more explained.
>What is a "good coat"?
>How much does a "good coat" cost?
>As much of a stretch as this question is, what, exactly, makes it look retarded?

I mean, I hung out with my ex-prestigiousexpensiveprivatecountryschool classmates. They're the ones that wanted to know where to buy one, you see.

If you want an example of a brand that produces great jackets and coats, look at Herno.

Peacoats are for hipsters who like to show that they're part of the working-class, when they're not. So take your cock-craving mouth and shut it.

Chillax bruh.
By that logic, Chinos are for people who wanna associate with 1800's armies.
Not only that, but if they're so "poor people", then they ARE for the working class?
I'm not really drawing much from your argument.

Just because something is played out on Internet forums or in metropolitan areas, that doesn't mean it is played out in your area. Even these days of social media and fast fashion there is still a time lag in fashion.

I live in Rural New Zealand, rite.
We are a country of 4 million people. In my rural community, I've seen a whooole bunch of swagulons running around with puffer jackets (SO MANY PUFFS) and Vans and shit... Same with the town I lived in before. I've been to the city, if anything, fashion there is much more conservative: Plenty of people were wearing peacoats. That is not to say that there wasn't still massive swagulon presence though.

Is this "fashion lag" nation-wide or wut? Cause I have friends in Ammurika who seem to be experiencing SIMILAR trends, but they are a tad different.

Trench coats > Pea Coats.
Pea coats fit like shit and are nothing more than a slightly shorter shortened trench coat.

If you are afraid to wear one, then you are just too busy buying into the le fedora movement on /fa/
