Hey guys, I've been browsing /fa/ for a while and was wondering about what kind of clothing styles do you prefer on girls?

I'm currently indecisive on what to wear and am wondering about your opinion

Honestly for "would date" material it would be baggy sweater+skinny jeans+flat shoes

I'm just basing it on the girls that I'm intimidated to talk to. I work at a cafe and we get 99% sluts all day in yoga pants, low cut tops, etc and I can spit game at them no problem, but I get nervous around non-bubbly qt girls.

It's not what I prefer to see on a girl so much as it is what I prefer NOT to see on a girl. The list includes Uggs, sweats with lettering on the ass, fast fashion, graphic tees, common or cloying perfume, Crocs, Pandora bracelets, shitty or predictable tattoos (Fairy on the ankle? Really?) and garments that blouse or puff out like a garbage bag between the upper arm and the hips instead of following the curve of the body to some degree. It looks like you're wearing a bag or flying squirrel wings and the first thing i think is "That woman must have a midsection that needs hiding." Because really, who wants to go traipsing around with that kind of a silhouette when they possess a great body, or are secure with what they do have?
Which is not to say I don't love oversized tees and weird drapey dresses on girls, I do - it's just this one type of dress that gets really overused by insecure or overweight women, I'm not sure what it's even called.
The most important thing is that they have some sort of style or direction and at least aspire to better. How they go about that is secondary. Interest & passion are key.

These are not hard and fast rules by any means, bb - it's just that most women aren't michelle in terms of confidence.
SA at the Rick store told me she always ignores maitre d's - waltzes right past them and throws her Revillon over whatever table she wants.
As for the dresses, the ones I'm talking about are more extreme in terms of just how much they hide... Jeez, I've just seen them used a lot by the wrong people for the wrong reasons.

girl to girl here:
-before you start investing in clothing, make sure you're at near enough your ideal weight/body shape, at least within the same size range
-know your body type and bone structure (and know that it will not change, no matter your weight wide hips are wide hips, broad shoulders will always broad as examples-dress to these)
-don't overexpose (as in, tastefully revealing-the difference between a simple sheer blouse with no bra and slim trou vs. a low cut tank and yoga pants is vast)
-know what you like or at least what you find visually interesting
-be confident and do not be afraid, dressing with thought and care gives you the excuse to not care about the opinions of others that don't do the same with themselves.

my questions are these, op, as someone who was at that same level of indecisiveness a little while ago;
what is your body type? what is your height and face shape, and what are your natural proportions and ratios?
more subjective: what do you like? what are your favourite colours and silhouettes? if you had to pick one pair of shoes to wear for the next month right now, what would they be?

personally i've taken on a uniform akin to picture related for the sake of practicality reasons-black shorts or skirt, often jersey cycling shorts, a black looser top (often times a flexible t-dress) that can be dressed up or down depending on the situation, and either boots or a pair of pragmatic-minded sandals depending on the weather. i'm still working on it, though. everyone is a work in progress.

i love seeing girls in clothing that suits their personality, fits well and is flattering-especially colourwise. i love seeing people pull of bright colours that make sense with who they are. pieces are a freeforall so long as they fall in the previous categories.

When it comes down to it, I rarely see a girl that dresses better than me. If I gave a shit I'd be trapping myself in an eternal dry spell.

however, if it's clear she's trying to hide her body with loose clothing, that's a mental problem independent of creative interests and preferences. Something I really would avoid.

You're thinking empire waists. (Google suggests "empire waist plus size," hah.) Honestly, I don't really have any special objection to them.

The stuff that turns me off is pretty much anything that hints at a deeper conformity - not even blandness or "obliviousness and trend-following," but stuff that seems like they're trying to conform their life to someone else's script. Bougie stuff, wish-I-was-not-just-technically-WASP stuff. Stuff that makes it look like their sole thought in dressing was not to have someone complain at the office*. Heels not wielded as weapons.

>SA at the Rick store told me she always ignores maitre d's - waltzes right past them and throws her Revillon over whatever table she wants.

I wonder how she gets away with that? Like, not just "confidence," but I would expect someone doing that would get rerouted by the more experienced and secure maitre d's, or at least a manager who saw it. Certainly at a busy time.

Not that I don't think it's awesome.

In other "holy shit Michele Lamy" trivia, apparently she spent a period of her life as a protege of fucking Deleuze. DELEUZE.

*And yeah, I know this is really tough for women, and it's one of the most odious things about the corporate world to me. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to get slut/prude shamed. I just wonder what makes them choose a path that put them in a position that restricts them in that way. Same goes for men in the industries (finance, white shoe law, etc.) where they get the same kind of pressure.

Good advice to OP, I think, too.

And I forgot to add: OP, lurk here, style.com, Tumblr, street style blogs, everything else cultural, figure out what you actually like and wear that. Don't let other people dress you, I guess, is my message. Certainly not the whims of thirsty 4chan fuccbois.

Exactly like this:

http://totokaelo.com/store/designers/ann-demeulemeester

http://totokaelo.com/store/designers/maison-martin-margiela

http://totokaelo.com/store/designers/jil-sander

http://totokaelo.com/store/designers/rick-owens

http://totokaelo.com/store/designers/yohji-yamamoto

Also pretty much everything on that site in general. I have come to the conclusion that Jill Wenger is the strongest buyer on the planet. Until I came across that store two weeks ago I was convinced the best of the best was John Skelton, formerly of Oki-Ni and now of LN-CC. This interview pretty much seals it:

http://www.sz-mag.com/news/2013/08/a-few-words-with-john-skelton-of-ln-cc/

But also just a quick browse over at LN-CC is a very convincing argument. However while Skelton is the undefeated champion of constantly surprising everyone and forging an empire out of buying the most difficult pieces to sell, Wenger has pretty much created a tiny universe of the most wearable and beautiful designer clothes on the planet. Not to mention Skelton has always fallen hard on styling (although sometimes the utter ridiculousness plays to his favour) while Wenger understands more so than anyone else how important the styling is to selling the clothes. The other thing that is huge for me is LN-CC is still based exclusively around designer goods whereas Totokaelo has had the acumen to bring in lower priced lines that still work aesthetically with the flagship designer brands. In fact it's almost genius that no one else has done this so perfectly and I'm almost completely convinced that Totokaelo is two steps ahead of the retail game and 3-5 years from now everyone will be following their model.

People already mix high with low, why not have it all under one roof? The idea of being able to find a matching pair of $60 jeans to go with your $1200 Rick jacket in the same store is genius. People are already going to go out and do it anyway and some even hire personal shoppers with half the taste of Jill to do it for them. Why not have the buyer of the store with impeccable taste bring in lower priced brands as well that they feel work strongly with their designer stock? Because it harms the prestige of the store? The end result doesn't seem anything like that.

Anyway I'm rambling, go check out that store OP, it's now the de-facto site I'm going to link to womenswear discussions. I'm not a chick but I've had to design womenswear recently and that store helped me a ton for just getting to click through 100's of pictures of impeccably styled outfits, it's the single best source of womenswear inspiration I've come across.

Also for anyone who cares they have a mens store now too, this was their first season and I'm convinced in a couple of years they're going to start being mentioned in the same breath as SSENSE, Tres Bien, Mr. Porter, and LN-CC. Here's an interview with the buyer to confirm that, she handles everything including the store design, look at that shit:

And I get she's wealthy, but how is a Maitre 'D going to know how wealthy? And the people whose table she grabbed are probably wealthy, too, and the staff at anywhere she's going is probably used to dealing with wealthy people, only deals with at least fairly wealthy people. I don't imagine she's strutting into too many cheap fast casual places.
