I'm just curious. Music-fashion links interest me, I don't really get the desire to dress like the music you listen to. I can appreciate the music. I like that you don't dress around it.
I just think 'punk' shouldn't be an aesthetic to strive towards. I made a post a few weeks back saying that I think decking yourself out in designer shit and getting real dandy is more contradictory to social norms than anything a stereotypical punk has done in the last few decades. Crusties latch onto trainhopping and shit because society and consumption is bad right? What they don't understand is that society knows it's bad. Embracing the consumerism to a nihilist extent counters modern societal values way more succinctly than contrived half-assed urban asceticism.

Anyway I personally live modestly. I don't strive to be punk or shake shit up.

To summarize the only really comprehensive way I can define punk is that it's supposedly counter-culture. But counter-culture is inescapably just as homogenizing as the culture being countered. I dislike the exclusivity of the mentality. I find it disrespectful and condescending. So yeah, my current definition of punk includes the people I thought were punk in middle-school, the rebels lacking even the modicum of self-awareness required to pick upon the patterns between their own uniformity. But it also includes the sincerely free spirited.

I'll put it this way. We use labels like 'punk' and 'hipster' to make communication more efficient. Instead of describing all this one dude's interests and values, I can just say he's a 'punk' or a 'hipster' and suddenly all these blanks have been filled in for me. I don't like using these words though because they carrry sooooo many connotations and assumptions that this verbal shortcut I wanted to use is now a conversational obstacle, and I am saying things about people that aren't true about them.

Fuck that took too long.

Very interesting concept, I find it funny that you're right, and that the 'punk' look has become more of the norm than what it originally rebelled against. How very cyclical.

Hey thanks for actually reading it. I'm honestly pretty ignorant about the history of punk in general. I'm not super cultured.

The one part I feel strongly about is the use of sub-cultural labels as a means of communication. The inefficiency of it really just blows my mind. I don't see the appeal of labels at all. People that use them become instantly less interesting to me when I hear them use the words with sincere intent while reflecting no understanding of how obtuse the terms really are.

I think they work to an extent, but people take the terms too far, or don't express which use of the term applies to a person.
For example, if a person dresses 'hipster' (quite a clear label, and therefore useful if someone asked how X dresses) but doesn't have the whole desire for underground bands and antique furniture, etc., and a person says they're a hipster, they're not making it clear they mean X dresses that way, but doesn't have the other idealogies that go along with that.
I feel I'm not explaining as well as I could, but basically I mean the labels could work if people made it clear how they're using them, and people heard them objectively, without the subjective connotations
