>> No.6752209

Baggy clothes do not look good. They come into fashion because they are a rebellion against looking good. You can look cool in baggy clothes because you look rebellious.

There is no benefit to looking rebellious in a suit, in fact it defeats the purpose of wearing a suit. Instead of looking like a man who has his shit together, you look like a man who has shit his (very expensive) pants.

Relaxed fit suits will always look best on men who are not thin or athletic, and slim suits will always look best on thin and athletic men. Loose or baggy suits will always make a man look like an idiot.

Here's my example:

Speaking as a guy who has extra fat, I'm telling you look I better in a slim fit shirt.

Shirts hang off the shoulders and chest. From there, they go straight down unless they hit something or are pulled by tapering.

If your gut sticks out, it doen't matter if you're wearing slim or regular fit shirts... it will still show. The placket hanging down from your chest will hit your gut, and everyone will see the curve.

The difference though, is that a tapered slim fit shirt will follow the curve of your back, where a regular shirt wont.

You end up looking twice as fat with the regular fit.

Truth is, unless you much fatter than even me, your waist measurments will still be a drop from your chest.

And if there's a drop, you can handle a slim fit shirt.

I will not argue with you about how to make you look best. However, we aren't making divergent arguments here, really. Your point is that dressing to look thinner is better, as is mine. I'm fit, so perhaps I don't know the nuance of making a fat guy look his best.

However from my experience, in suits, a jacket that hangs straight from the shoulders can hide a fairly large flat tire, and appears to hide a spare tire even if one isn't there. I have broad, muscular shoulders, and when I wear a baggy suit jacket, it looks like a circus tent. On the other hand, when I wear a slim-fit suit, I look like a complete badass. I will take you at your word that a man with a bit extra around the gut still looks better in a slim suit, so take me at my word that I look fat in a loose suit.

The most common is the half break, where it's only in the front. This looks good with a cuff hem.

Here is another example. Notice there is almost no taper in the jacket.

Shoulder pads, tapers and slim cuts end up making you look feminine and less likely to succeed at business. (You'll look less trustworthy at a subconscious level)

On top of that, it's less #comfy. There's a reason why this look has endured for 60+ years as the upper class uniform.

This is huge.

The American look is above all, honest-looking. It's suposed to make you look like a decent, average, hard-working, baseball and apple pie, all american guy.

It's only natural they are. Baggy clothes become fashionable in times of economical or social crisis, and it so happens that we are undergoing a time of such a crisis.
I suppose it's cheaper to have non-tailored clothes, and on the other hand the bagginess creates a feeling of opulence.

Look, 20s had fairly slim fits -> Great Depression -> baggy 30s -> World War II -> baggy early 40s.

Slim 50s and early 60s with the perfect suburban communities portrayed in Mad Men -> social upheaval, hippies and Vietnam -> baggy late 60s and early 70s.

Mid 70s slim again -> oil crisis -> baggy 70s and early 80s.

The only era that doesn't conform to this is the 90s, but they were fucked up.

suiting in the 20s was huge; ww2 suiting was extremely slim, with slim lapels and no pleats; immediately following world war 2, christian dior and balenciaga react with huge, yardage consuming silhouettes, but this was well before the postwar recovery and was a reaction to war time austerity, it had nothing to do with economics.

suiting in the 50s and early 60s was anything but slim and that's why 60s youth culture ended up adopting slim clothing. it was rebellion.

shut up and sit down, is what i'm trying to tell you.

Big lapels and flared pants don't necessarily mean a baggy cut. Notice how tight these pants are at the crotch and thigh.
