I'm partial to 1. I think they complicated the formula too much after that. I like the old cartoon world war 2 archetypes of 1, as well.
I think 2 and 3 are more challenging games tho, with better bosses and vehicles.

Lift 3-5 days a week, sometimes with a trainer. I bike or run almost every day, but a lot less nowadays that I'm shooting for gains. Maybe half an hour a day of cardio that I'd gladly cut down to five minutes if I didn't like the high it gives me so much.

The Israel thing just made sense to me - everything else in Metal Slug is a caricature, the Israeli & the Palestinian are too. The guy in the suit even has some document he's sticking in the other one's face and the animation is expressive enough to show a wide cultural divide. It just comes through. I never read any of the Arabic, but I was in college at the time, studying the Israel/Palestine situation in one class and the history of Islam in another. What does it say?

When I found out you could emulate them I basically memorized the games, if only as a way to experience the content they contained - I have a real soft spot for the lush, fluid sprite animation the game perfected. From a design standpoint, Metal Slug was the ultimate, perfect run & gun arcade shooter. It was a solid quarter eater with an intimidating learning curve that was appealing enough to look at & play in a very raw sense - it's the art, the backgrounds and the humor that kept me going, not to mention the mechanical design.
I feel like there was definitely a tongue-in-cheek message, too: "war is completely absurd." There's been a completely reasonable japanese obsession with the archetypal mega-weapon since the end of WW2. From 'Fat Boy & Little Boy' to Godzilla and then on to city-destroying robots, it's really not such a leap when you think about it.
Metal Slug showcases absurd fictional mega-weapons one after another and constantly tops itself. Its boss characters are almost in an arms race with each other. Along the way, it's dropping constant references to famous battlefields throughout Europe (mostly in the original game). It's a grand, ornate caricature of war with all the trappings of real world conflicts. I don't know if this makes sense, but Metal Slug is kind of like a Buzz Rickson jacket. It's a pitch perfect take on a classic made by detail obsessed artisans. At the same time, it's the sort of thing that could only ever come out of Japan.
