Dumb question time

Why do people wear dressing gowns at home? Never owned one and I don't get why would it be a good idea to have one. Sounds like an unnecessary piece to clutter up your closet.

well, i wear one because i usually just wear a large shirt instead of actual pajamas to bed

when i don't want to walk around my house in just a shirt but don't have to get dressed for the day, then i wear my robe

i'd wager a lot of people wear them during the winter for extra warmth
