the 5 year thing is a generalisation, some pieces might keep good time for 10 years (doubt it though).
If you're not wearing it often and it times out it, the lubrication inside may not get used up and you may get longer out of it, but I'm not sure.

Go on a watch forum.Or ask the person who owned it before you.

Get it started and wear it for a week, monitor what it gains/loses each day and use that as an indicator of whether it needs servicing also.
I'm talking setting synching it with a quarts or computer TO THE SECOND and comparing daily.
