I'm really sorry that everything is sideways. it either points one way, or I do a quarter turn and it 180s the other way. any tips on how to make shit show up correctly?

hey man I just bought an entry-level machine (brother cs6000i), and my first project was this pencil pouch/clutch... followed the tutorial here: http://www.designsponge.com/2010/09/sewing-101-zippered-case.html

after that my second project was this purse for my sister. it is like two pieces for the body plus the strap... double that for the lining but it was very easy. I forget where the tutorial was from

after that I just dove into this cardi pattern. it comes from threadtheory.ca ... it's a new site that makes just mens patterns in modern (slim) cuts. any commercial patterns will have clear but very concise directions. they all use good lingo concerning what type of seam or technique should be used. if you don't understand something you can just youtube the technique

maybe the very best beginner project I did was the crazy patterned dress I posted above (and here). I used Angela Kane's free patterned and crazy-long and detailed instructions on youtube. after you tackle something like a pencil pouch or anything that gets you comfortable with sewing on a machine, you should do this pattern. she literally does every step of the way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D57VSC3smbI

after that you're fit to do pretty much anything

alright, thanks dude. I'll get around to trying something like this eventually.
My first project is sitting somewhere- I destroyed my old black jeans and I'm hand stitching the bigger holes back together.

yeah, handstitching is a lost art but very valuable. at the same time I would recommend just getting a machine, as 99% of stuff can be done w a machine in 10% of the time. you can work your way up to pretty much any garment type in a year by being a dedicated self-teacher

>> No.6670848

>>6670836

also I would recommend staying away from the "craftsy" tutorials and youtube channels and seek out people who have training or experience in the garment industry. pretty much all the shortcuts I've seen aren't really worth it. making it the right way might take a bit longer but gives better results.

hah I guess that was the inspiration man, but at the same time, it feels much better to say you made something (for $50 bucks) rather than copped some expensive brand most plebs haven't heard of

I just need a peer group, but I mean, that won't be easy to find

even your local jo-ann's has classes. you will have to deal with making shit you don't really care about, but they would teach you all the foundational techniques.

>is foundational even a word? didn't get the red squiqqly so whatever
