I'm not trying to start a troll thread, but would someone PLEASE explain to me the appeal of the almighty Geobaskets? I do understand they are high-quality shoes with solid construction and fine materials, there's no doubt about that. But how do they look good? Excuse me if I say they look like, well... clown shoes. They look huge on just about everyone, that sole is way too thick, the tongue is ridiculous, the design looks obnoxious... I don't get it. What's the appeal?

>inb4 2deep4u, fuccboi, etc. I'm trying to start a discussion here.

>> No.6669558

The appeal is the oversized look, the big tongue, the in your face reworking of a classic sneaker. If you don't get it you'll never get it, that's that. It's like explaining the appeal of a painting to someone who doesn't like it.

The whole thing with fashion is not everyone likes the same things.

Most people here start off not liking them and as they get more into fashion they tend to really grow on you.

Rick Owens has a lot unique footwear and comparing them to clown shoes isn't starting a discussion, it's just you being silly.

Not really. People come here and aren't interested in fashion at first. They just want to follow guides and infographics to dress "average"

So when someone first comes here and sees a large, chunky sneaker bigger than anything they've seen before of course they are going to react adversely. They see zippers and think wtf why would you ever do that.

Then once they develop an interest in fashion they really do start to look better as you see how they can improve an outfit just like any unique designer shoes.

It's more becoming open-minded than hype.

It's a caricature of a sneaker. It takes certain key stylistic elements of the hightop basketball shoe and turns the volume up to 11. It does so with great leather, and the soles on the newer ones are pretty great, too.
For most of us, having grown up with some fragment of sneaker culture playing a role in our lives, this shoe represents a graduation of sorts. It's extreme, it's over the top and it's also a commentary on sneaker styling in general. Rick himself said that when he was in the gym back in the day, he always noticed that the guys who lifted the heaviest had crazy hightops. Big, oversized tongues, glorious padding, the whole works. His idea was to trump every card in the sneaker playbook and make a "turbocharged" (his words) version of the venerable high top trainer.
Rick's shoe is a very natural bridge for us here, it's a midpoint between the sneaker and street-borne cultures of our youth and the high fashion we are learning to idolize.

No, /fa/ used to ignore rick and bring him up jokingly. Often to troll Sieg.

I haven't been around forever, but I'd say the rise of rick being legitimately worn and respected coincides with creation of the faggot store sticky. Oldfags correct me if I'm wrong.

When the faggot store first went up, there were a lot of people against a sticky because they said it would stifle creativity and promote a singular aesthetic.

The sticky was sold on the idea that it would divert basic bitch questions and leave room to discuss "real fashion" instead of having infographic threads all the time.

So now infographics became the domain of newfags and people had to distinguish themselves from the infographics in order to enlarge their e-peens. They had to start doing "real fashion". Whatever the fuck that was.

Thus: Rick Owens and goofninjitsu. Of course we all know how that turned out. SSENSE sale leftover goof diffusion brands and a lot of bad fits has slowly cheapened the whole aesthetic and now we're back to making jokes about rick and goofs again.

And oh look, now there's an 'avante garde' entry in the sticky.

Law of diminishing returns.

In terms of dollars, the difference between 'absolute shit' and 'pretty damn good' is not all that much . But the difference between 'pretty damn good' and 'perfect' is extreme.

Like with a CPU. You can buy the best for a stupid amount of money. And that's just what it costs.

But maybe you can get 80% of the performance for 1/4 the price.

Or even less. I'm making up numbers here. The point is, cost and performance ratios don't scale in linear fashion.

With all that said, I think people who spend 3000 dollars on a CPU are fucking retarded. Even if that's what it costs to make the damn thing.

And I don't think geobaskets actually cost 1200 bucks to make.

Maybe if you factor in the cost of rick's time to design the things... but really now. They're an old design at this point. And design is a one time cost. Design costs matter less and less the more of the things that you make (or fake).

validation or appreciation

Personally the latter. I spent thousands of dollars on Ann D a bit on rick. And I look at my self in the mirror and think how damn good I look. And yet I've never posted a fit anywhere, not here or SZ. I lurk here more than SZ because this place is more of a comedic gold mine. And when I do post here it's rarely serious.

Then on the other hand there's people who buy shit for validation and well... that hardly flies.

Also bunch of folks who come on here hoping /fa/ will lower their standards money-wise because they are poor. But they just get laughed at because /fa/ shouldn't lower it standards for the poor but at the same time it shouldnt matter either because being /fa/ is subjective.

I guess a positive kind of brainwashing, because it makes people open minded.

Basically: someone who doesn't have a clue about fashion comes here and practically uses /fa/ as his only income of solid fashion advice.

/fa/ is all over RO so it's almost impossible to start hating his shoes because 'you don't know any better'. You just accept them and kinda leave your own opinion out of it.

If those those were constantly being ripped here, n3wb13s would probanly openly say they hate them as well.

I mean, I bet there are lots of high-end fashion designers (who obviously have a huge interest in fashion) that find those shoes disgustingly ugly, regardless of the final outfit.

It's easy to be "open minded" about something that is expensive and accepted especially when their only retort is "p-poorfag" or "d-dadcore fag".

If you don’t ‘get’ the aesthetic, then maybe it would be better if you ignored the thread altogether or changed your approach. It shouldn’t be a case of coming here and asking that people should “convince” you of the superiority of Yohji’s designs compared to more traditional and dare I say mundane offerings. Maybe if you started by looking at the references and design inspirations for the looks and outfits here exclusive of external comparisons to more traditional masculine outfits it would make a lot more sense down the road. Big words and purple prose a good point does not make.

the real point is: you either like it or you don't. instead of you faggots talking the designers inspiration or whether or not it's a parody all you have to say is "I like it and here's why".
