Don't you guys feel ridiculous wearing really expensive clothing just so that you can look like this idea of what you think you should look like? Whether it be because you want to look different than everyone else or simply because you think a certain style makes you look the best you can possibly look. I'm 23 years old and I go to school in Philadelphia. No one here dresses beyond basic (basic as in UO/Gap/AA look), and the few who do dare to be adventurous usually look out of place and silly for a number of reason (unattractive, style doesn't work with his/her features, etc.)

I wear basic boring shit myself. Jeans, collared shirts, t-shirts, Keds, Clarks; all clothing I bought like five years ago, and haven't bought anything since because it all fits well, which is the most important thing, and because it took me a couple years to build up a wardrobe. Problem is now I don't like any of it anymore because you see that shit everywhere. This past year I never saw desert boots outside of the mall from 2009. Then all of a sudden, everyone fucking has them. I know that they've been around since the 60s/70s, but I'm just like everyone else. If I see something gaining popularity, I begin to hate it. But the desert boots are just an example.

Even when I get a job as an engineer, I won't be required to wear suits, which is really the only logical thing to wear in a professional environment, especially if you're over the age of 25, because everyone dresses like a slob. There's no difference than the guy who wear flip flops in December, and the guy who just discovered Reddit MFA and cleaned out the nearest Urban Outfitters. I'll eventually have to stop wearing skinny jeans because age is a factor unless you're a celebrity. There's no end, and there's no way to win. I'm going to wear jeans for the rest of my life, and I have no reason to otherwise because America just doesn't give a shit about its appearance, and you're a tryhard if you do.

You won't be young forever.

That's where I stopped taking you seriously. You guys all have the same mentality. I grew up around it and I've seen it all through school and life.

You need to understand that some people wear clothes because they like clothing. YOU, on the other hand, said this:
>Whether it be because you want to look different than everyone else or simply because you think a certain style makes you look the best you can possibly look.

That's two alternatives you gave us. They're both wrong. They both involve defining the self in relation to others and for the sake of others. People like me define ourselves because the process gives us joy. That is all. There is no endgame. There is only the joy of becoming right now.

You're not one of me, and that's okay. You have a role to play in this life too. You are concerned with processes and results. Thank god for that, we need that as a species. Just try and remember that this isn't about social climbing for some people. It's about love of an art form, and the experience of the garment is its own reward.

Art has no function, so how can something like clothes that you wear be art? I understand that some of the catwalk stuff can well be called art. Outside of that however, the clothes you buy and see in shops are geared towards the practical. It's not art, but design.

Also I don't understand why you're trying to separate art and design? design is an important part of art. a lot of things that should be said have already been said, but i just wanted to respond to this

>Don't you guys feel ridiculous wearing really expensive clothing just so that you can look like this idea of what you think you should look like?
i certainly don't feel ridiculous spending money on something i love. as poet said, the problem with this view is that it assumes that people only wear certain clothing to define themselves in relation to others (to clarify, i don't think it's inherently wrong to consider what others think of your appearance).

>I wear basic boring shit myself...
i'm not sure how this actually falls in relation to the rest of your post (you're upset about trends trickling down to the lowest common denominator, or questioning our motives for wearing certain things?) but i will try to respond. i think it is perfectly fitting that you now dislike your basic, old, mall-brand wardrobe as a result of others dressing similarly, although it's strange that you're threatened by losing a perceived facet of exclusivity while you criticize our fashion choices.

>Even when I get a job as an engineer...
i honestly expected you to be stem from the first line of your post. i'm personally of the belief that clothing should not be purely logical. obviously there are considerations of function, construction, etc. from a design perspective, but it is also important for an item to resonate with you on a deeper level. i feel like having the mindset of a nebulous "endgame" is a mistake; you can't win at yourself.

i don't expect we will see eye to eye, but from a designer to an engineer: please be more human. not everything has to have a solution; you may just find the process much more rewarding. peace and love

nothing you've written is "inhuman", but it shows that you seem to refuse to empathize with differing world views. lamenting the lack of an endgame in your opening post, the black and white thought-terminating statements (clothes are not art, art has no function, etc.), just seems like such a cold way to see to me. the "be more human" comment was directed more toward your profession, rather than relating to fashion. studying and working in architecture, i've seen too often engineers create (admittedly beautiful) solutions that forget about the people for which they were made.

don't take the heat in this thread so negatively; it's just fashion after all. peace and love

>> No.6669088

I've like to take the time to point out that OP is 23, and still in school. he implies that he'll be working as an engineer. this has as much truth behind it as someone in high school saying they'll get x degree, and work for x company.

I hate to rain on unadulterated dreams, but the odds of you doing anything with that degree, much less getting it are hilariously low, especially seeing how your original post has no real form, or semblance of clear thought. obviously English isn't your best class. I'm reading your list of clothing, and scratching my head. simple shit is fruit of the loom, hanes, Levi, chucks, etc. I don't know if any if the bands you mention, because I'm non native to /fa/. you're just butthurt because you don't want to update your look because you're lazy/poor/hate feeling like somehow changing your style = being perceived as someone who cares about how they look (yes /fa/, many people are afraid to change for this reason. social stigmas are real in many areas.)

Grow up first, figure your issues out on your own like a man, then come back and lurk for whatever you are interested in until you come up with a better idea of what'll work for you. Post only when you have your full ensemble flushed out, and listen to the advice you receive.
