The label "waterproof" is rarely used anymore because it's all about depth/pressure: 3atm, 5atm, 10atm, etc.

I highly doubt you'll be doing any professional diving with a watch. Lots of watch companies tell you different things but most say that 3atm is only good for splashes, washing your hands, and rain, which, IMO is a load of shit. They tell you that 3atm is not enough for swimming because of "dynamic pressure": allegedly, pressure goes up significantly while moving in water.

While swimming at no greater a depth than the average pool, pressure goes up, but not enough to surpass 3atm. However, I still wouldn't swim with a 3atm watch because A) why risk it: just take it off and B) I don't expect the testing for a 3atm watch to actually be very rigorous.

If you'd like more info about "dynamic pressure", there are dozens of threads on this topic/myth on respectable watch forums.

Some say that the watch industry has purposely perpetuated the "dynamic pressure" myth so as to justify the cost of more expensive watches with greater water resistance.

Heat should also be taken into consideration when considering water resistance. Gaskets between openings in the watch and their respective covers seal the movement from outside contaminants, such as water. Heat, especially that of a sauna or hot shower could potentially damage these gaskets, allowing for breach.

Again, this could all be avoided if you take of your goddamn watch.
