Depends on the bag and the person and other components of their personality.

Generally, it just translates to a boring personality and lack of creativity. There are different bags at similar price points that are better made and have more interesting qualities.

For luggage, it reflects a bit of opulence. They're well-made but travelling isn't as light as it used to be, and bags go through a lot. But there isn't much in terms of mainstream luxury beyond the standard Heys bags you can buy at Sears. It's funny to be at a baggage carousel where people have their LV bags plastic wrapped.

A lot of trust fund babies and JAPs get them as gifts (uninspired presents from daddy, like Tiffany bracelets). I think they can be nice in certain shapes, but once they carry the monogram print, they are used, without doubt, as status symbols. A lot of nouveau riches women who grew up in middle-class families in small towns and now finally have their own job and their own place and their own life (and no boyfriend) carry them everywhere (except for yoga classes).

I think the fact that they're used as status symbols sends a particularly strong message. A girl in my sorority buys "vintage" fake bags on ebay and it's so tacky but she just longs to be a part of some upper elite. I've told her the bags are fake and she just says "they still look cute."

Because they aren't actually rich or successful, the skip straight to the bag part and convince themselves that because they have attained the end goal (become successful -> get rich -> buy bag) they must, by extension, have completed the necessary steps to get there.
