When I worked retail a few years back, we were basically told we had to talk to each customer and ask if they need help or we'd be talked to by management or whatever. Usually I'd only do it if I knew there was no one else around in nearby sections working, or just ask them how their days were going.

It's actually not that bad where I live. If I go into the wealthier areas of Atlanta (more nouveau riche than anything else, really) where the public transportation runs, there's a lot more prejudice (that may just be a money thing, though).

Retail shopping is an inherently stupid and awkward process, everyone knows it and feels it, and if you can break the spaghetti wall that builds up, acknowledge that they exist, let them know that you're genuinely game to answer any questions and offer any real help they may need without sales pressure, it's better for everyone. Also cuts down on theft. Also boosts your numbers relative to the lazy clerks, which, let's face it, feels good and helps you get away with disregarding a lot of the bullshit about working retail.

It's been a while since I worked retail, but I made a point of doing it. It helped that I legitimately had other duties, but walking past someone on the way to something, asking how they are or if they need anything while pausing for the briefest moment mid-stride, and moving on with an honestly affected smile if they're fine works wonders. I nearly always was at #2 or #3 on the sales chart behind the woman working jewelry and wound up having customers coming in and asking for me by name, despite it very much not being that kind of store.

The drummer got into narcotics a bit too much and went to rehab, but he's clean now and I helped him get enrolled and accepted into university for engineering.
