All this "high grade" materials is just bullshit if you cant make proper use of it, ie giza and "sea island" cotton (definition used loosely), i have tons of super soft socks made by it but whats the point of making a super soft shirt/sweat etc if it looses it's original shape completely after one wash. Who puts an "elk" leather tab that will stiffen and snap on machine wash items? Try making a decent cotton sweat thats not completely fucked in the body and neck after two washes first... I think all the "high grade" material suede shoes i still have thats older than a xouple of years all have holes in the suede and have been to the cobbler multiple times. All gore tex items I've ever had from visvim had the same issues, snap buttons coming loose cause of inferior reinforcement, taped seams coming loose etc, etc.. Gap, jcrew, prl and the likes with large scale production will in 99% of cases take a piss on visvim in the quality department, even on a 15$ shirt.. Didnt hiroki use to work for burton? I still have several 10+ year old snowboard jackets with taped seams from burton i still use, not from his department surely.

I notice a lot of brands that had made in japan construction are moving to China. It's like when Euro designers move their production to portugal.

GLEAT QUALITY ALTISAN WOLKSMANSHIT

>> No.6553258

Leaving aside the bullshit racism, Goretex, having been around since 1969, is arguably falling into classic/vintage/even (gasp!) heritage status now.

I'd be curious as to if Visvim was using an up-to-date fabric marketed under the Goretex name or a more classic formulation of it.

visvim isn't about tradition, come on. I don't know if they ever claimed to be, but their products certainly don't look like they're aiming for "traditional"

they hybridize tradition and modern tech

there are plenty of high-end brands that actually are "about tradition" in japan and elsewhere, but tradition is only one piece of the puzzle for visvim. I mean, look at the fucking heel counters on their boots, or the soles on their moccasins

Seriously, China is the worst of capitalism coupled with the near-worst of Stalinism, but comparisons like this aren't helpful and have nothing directly to do with construction quality.

I'm not familiar with Visvim beyond looking through lookbook pictures, actually, and I just kind of assumed they were one of those.

Would they even be able to make a better version of it

Its pretty good, so putting resource into making a better version would be a waste of time imo

Of course they don't necessarily imply construction quality

That was just an aside

Visvim construction quality is shit

I know they've claimed tradition but I don't know in what way, because I don't follow the brand. I don't know whether they said they are "all about tradition" or "very interested in tradition" or "inspired by tradition" or what.

>> No.6553410

Definitely.

There's a basic, physical contradiction in this kind of fabric, "waterproof breathable:" you need to engineer it so no water gets in, while trapping as little air and sweat vapor inside as possible. The ideal fabric would let no water through (easy; a rubber jumpsuit will do it) and wick sweat away from you as well as wool and dry as quickly as polyester without winding up smelling like sweat.

Getting all that going is very difficult and the subject of a lot of R&D. Quickly Googled up article:

Sorry for the l8 reply and thanks for the article

I understand that there's R&D, I misread your post saying that visvim itself would be developing the new fabric. I wasn't aware at all that gore-tex was being surpassed though, thanks a poopload for the info.

I just hope it actually works
