Well son, even if you draw it, the artist still has to do a rendition of it on a temporary tattoo so he can get a rough idea of the size, technique, and inks to be used. It's better to give them a specific idea and then work with them to conjure up a good illustration of what you want.

An excellent tattoo, from a clean, private, and award winning shop/artist will cost around 125-200 dollars/hr. They also usually require a security deposit to make an appointment.

Larger pieces (aka the back, chest) can cost upwards of 10's of thousands of dollars from a reputable artist.

How much do you think Cole's tats were?

It really varies on the artist. My tentacles were $350 and my hatchet was $150 (plus tip). It's worth it to go with a good artist though.

Hey /fa/, I'm not really a /fa/ guy most of the time, but could someone explain the rationale behind getting a tattoo to me? I kind of just... Don't get it.

Wish I could tell you. Copped that from a Salvation Army with no branding, labels, or manufacturing information on it, and no sign of a ripped tag. My guess is that it was just made by some visionary in his basement, and he decided not to do anything with it. If anyone recognizes it I'd be curious to find out what it is.

If they don't instantly appeal to you, they're probably just not your thing. I wasn't interested in tattoos until I drew the one on my arm with a sharpie one night when I was like 17, and for some reason I decided I wanted it permanently. Now I have a bunch of them. I wouldn't get one unless you find a design that you really want after like a year of sitting on it.

Yeah, those reasons were mostly what I figured. I work customer service and the number of shitty tattoos I see on a day-to-day basis has kind of put me off the idea I guess. Perhaps I just don't like the self-expression of most people.

a lot of fantastic stuff here.

but guys, you know what's the problem about tattoo threads? you only see them as photos that are meant to show the tattoo. What I would like to see once in a while is how a tattoo looks in everyday life, combined with certain outfits, in certain situations. If I walk around on the beach with a white tank top and navy shorts, how does tattoo X look? does it complement the style? does it add an interesting note? or maybe the opposite; does it look extremely out of place? or even ridiculous?

Sometimes tattoos look fantastic on pictures that are meant to show the tattoo, but they are meh when you see them on IRL photos when the person is actually doing something, wearing something, etc.
The more I realize this, the more I am attracted to minimalist tatoos (black bars, rings, etc), although those are arguably a bit bland and boring. But then again, they are cheap and timeless.
