Please post your best tech inspo pics.

Keep in mind that the textile of your backpack will affect the textile of the jacket you can use with it.
Heavy duty waterproof stuff like MilSpec tarp (chrome uses this) and ballistic nylon will fuzz up a lot of garments. I wouldn't wear my chrome bag with some of my nicer hoodies, for example.
If I'm using a leather bag or a brushed canvas bag, it's a different story. If I'm wearing a leather or denim jacket, I can rock a heavy bruiser of a bag.
Just something to think about when you make your choice.

It's something that's not easy to gauge until you have both fabrics in your hand, but a lot of tech jackets are made with synthetics in their shell. Sometimes when the bag is tubbing against the synthetic fabric, little fibers can break and get balled up, leaving that unsightly layer of fuzz around your shoulders and butt, where the bag is hitting.
Sometimes you can get a fabric shaver (evercare, 19.99) and restore the look by shaving off those little balls. Sometimes even this process would damage the garment further. With something like a nice new Musto Sailing smock? well, until I had it in my hands I couldn't be 100%, but chances are it's heavy enough to face up to cordura or milspec tarp.
Still though, I would be wearing a brushed twill bag with that jacket. Something softer.
Other garments, like this Rapha Raeburn jacket, will simply lose some of their detailing, like those silver spots on the arms. The website actually warns about this.
I started really thinking about this after I ruined some great shirts.

I'm not any of you but I just got my commuter cargos today, 32x32 from rei

I'll post some fit pics later but if you got any questions I can answer

also the quality is great, much heavier material than I expected. the side pockets actually are two pockets on top of each other, one has the button close thing. stitching looks solid, there's extra stitching for the bike lock holding thing and the fit is great. one thing; for my skinny calves the snap thing on the legs isn't enough to get the calves to conform properly, so I double cuff it and then use the snap thing over the cuff, which works much better than just cuffing or the buckle. like I said I'll post pics later.

they're approximately as fitting as 511s, maybe slightly less, but they are bulkier because of the material and details. they look thicker, if that makes any sense. which is the point.

can't tell if I did the double cuff thing or just the regular cuff here. but I don't think anyone can see shit anyway. btw the insides have reflective stripes which show if you cuff them normally.

Why couldn't it be? Loose skirts and dresses are easy as fuck to move in. I'm visualizing something like a thin ripstop nylon cloak dress, extending to mid thigh or a little lower, upper part imagined after a travel jacket, with the double sets of pockets and all. Gussets & pitzips, the body has a separate panel blocked off at the waist with some extra elastene in it.

Worn over a wicking base top and leggings - I'd do something like a merino-nylon-elastene blend, but you could do poly if you wanted something more "technical." IMO, wool's a better material if you can get it durable enough, simply for wicking better and not smelling.

Of course everything is treated with some kickass Schoeller DWR. Shoes could be anything from RM Williams style Chelsea workboots, to engineer boots, to techy trainers, to some CP Achilles if you wanted to make it extra casual-elegant.

Also, check out the Nike x Undercover Gyakusou collaboration. It's brilliant, and I know they have at least one skirt included.

If you're looking for just a general daypack, I can't recommend Hyperlite Mountain Gear enough. Simple and made out of cuben, a dyneema-poly blend.

Patagonia and REI both make similar bags to Hyperlite's in less technical materials (just, you know, ripstop nylon), and REI's take on it is just $29.

They were (are) on sale for $60 on Levi's website but the black pants are sold out. Last i checked there were still yellow ones available in the smaller sizes if that's your thing.

I'm coming more from classic travel/safari jackets, but I definitely see the commonality with the combat smocks.

I'm big on the idea of taking clothing out of this binary setup – taking the good out of masculine styling and the good out of feminine styling, varying stuff only in cut for body shape. One of the things I love about techwear and traditional functional wear (military stuff, classic explorer's/hunter's wear, etc.) is how close it comes to that ideal.

I don't, I just know there's a lot of wild looking, well made garments in the tactical field that everybody is sleeping on because it's not being marketed to them. Case in point, Pic Related.

Most folks used to getting this stuff after some designer waters it down a bit or makes it more easily wearable. Hell, there are designers who base their entire career on dumbing down lttle known tactical pieces.

Honestly, as someone getting into fashion by way of a ton of other interests – other arts, philosophy, politics, active shit – it seems like the only way that makes sense for the world right now. We're ready to move beyond limiting conceptions of what human life, culture, tools, individuals can be and work out better ways for each of us to flourish. Hybrid-gender-ideal technical clothing, I think drawing selectively on other past ideals, seems the obvious place to take fashion.

Not to dump on someone's artistic vision that goes otherwise, but yeah.

Kind of, but I think there's more than enough overlap to not call it a dichotomy. Consider >>6469773. Imagine it in black. It'd go just fine with the "urban" stuff.

Conversely, put >>6461746 into a camouflage pattern.

Then look at >>6467535 - I don't know about you, but that outfit reads martial as fuck to me. If I didn't know it was from some SZ meetup or something, I wouldn't be shocked to find out the guy's a PMC or something.

What they share in common is, yes, being engineered, but not just in the sense of having fancy fabrics and gussets and shit. But they're all form-follows-function designs with the same function: keep the environment inside relatively controlled, schlep items the wearer needs, and allow easy movement, all to let the wearer do what he needs to do. There's not a huge difference in construction between an on-road truck and an off-road truck besides the suspension, even if one is painted camouflage and the other is matte black. Similarly, I think the main non-color difference between "adventure" and "urban" techwear is in what kind of shoes are appropriate. More tread, possibly more support.

You also see these cross-pollinating a lot. Military tech gets cycled back into civilian clothing, and the military is starting to take up innovations from civilian sportswear.

Separately - as in, I'm not being stupidly literal with the cross-pollinating bit here, just illustrating the whole post - check out these shirts from Massif. (Also, this isn't an endorsement of their styling or anything. Pure point illustration.)

This is a shirt from their military line.

Honestly, it seems to be sunglasses design is really stagnant. You have classic mid-20th-century designs, ugly Oakley style designs, and bland yuppiecore stuff.

Personally, I like the Persol 714: they've got an almost goggle-like fit while still looking sleek. I vaguely remember hearing they were designed as protective wear for Italian train conductors, but the last time I tried to Google that up I couldn't find anything. They're sleek and modernist without being plain, and they fold up.

But for pure techwear, unless you're going to dip in Oakley stuff, I think your best bet is actual Goggles. Will dump a little shortly.

"Worn by the Swiss military mountain riflemen in the 1920’s, these extreme dark green lenses of these goggles shielded their eyes from the glare of the sun reflecting off the bright white glaciers. The real glass lenses are held in place by brass rims. Brass was used for the rims so they wouldn’t rust under severe conditions, and they were painted black so they didn’t reflect the sun. The rims were also vented to prevent fogging and were lined with a soft velvety material for comfort next to your face. The flexible cloth nose piece and tie strings hold the goggles surprisingly snug to your face. All that and they even come in their original hinged tin carry case. Whether you’re a collector or plan on using them for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or motorcycling, you’ll see that these are a very special find. Gently used nice condition."

These are cheap and a great design, but obsolete now. Glass lenses are fragile and probably aren't coated to block UV (polycarbonate lenses are stronger and inherently block UV).

Also, one thing I'd like to see a techwear sunglasses company do: melanin lenses. Google up high energy visible light. Sometime I'm going to look at getting custom melanin lenses for my sunglasses. Right now, they're available in brown and a slightly less protective grey/black.

My view is that there are two different attitudes towards urban techwear. Both share qualities of functionality and high-tech materials and features, but they differ in the attitude they portray towards the urban metropolis.

The first attitude is optimistic and reflects the feeling that technology and dense population centers serve to bring people together. With the Internet and social networking it's easier than ever to share your experiences and meet others, and cities can be a place of adventure and excitement. I can imagine these people walking around or with their gameboy in their pocket, finding others to do Pokemon battles with or playing in the arcade or something. Or maybe just wandering around the city taking in the sights.

The second attitude emphasizes the feelings of isolation and conflict in the city. It's the wet pavement neon cyberpunk thing combined with a social message of division a la Lost in Translation. This is the threatening and more directly militant styling. You could imagine these people planting dirty bombs in the subway. I posted a lot of these fits near the beginning of the thread.

They have similarities, like I said, but it's the difference between this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqx7OO5K9t8

>>6461796

and this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0D1uCzzrLI

So it's a matter of choosing which part of techwear appeals to you as an individual. or maybe it's something else, feel free to share.

Looks like a good piece, but two things to note: first, it’s just a rain shell; unlike a running jacket, there’s no wicking (polyester or wool) layer inside. You’ll have to wear a poly or wool base for the whole function. I’d actually favor this, most of the time, but it’s something to be aware of. Also means zero insulation built in.

Second, it’s marked as “regular fit,” so just be conscious of that.

>>6474574
Hm. I've never really cottoned (poly backed nylon ripstoped?) to TNF and this might be why. Or more my association of them with the nylon (?) shouldered fleeces that I've never really liked the look of and were a status symbol in the small Southern city I grew up in. I didn't even realize The North Face was a serious gear company and not/as well as a frip lifestyle brand until I was 21 or 22, when I happened to stop in one of their retail stores to kill time and looked something up.

At the same time, though, there's something "blocky" (associative, not literal) and conservative in the feel of a lot of their designs, but I might be projecting there, too. I almost bought their Momentum fleece earlier this year, which I liked the design and technical features of overall, but wound up forgoing for a Marmot Reactor. I can’t remember exactly why, but probably because the I was looking for “a fleece” more than “a light-midweight polyester midlayer,” which it’s an excellent example of, wanting only for a hood. But I remember going into it decidedly not wanting to buy a North Face, for all the above reasons.

Logos generally I avoid, and I wish nothing came with them, but some I don’t mind. It’s no less visible, really, but I don’t object to the Marmot label on the jacket. Stuff I do object to, mostly on electronics (I’m not even sure how well it’d stick to fleece), I use a custom picked up from being a photographer - gaffer’s tape over the logo. It started among photojournalists with Leicas, as a way to make the camera’s big red dot logo less obtrusive and make the camera seem more beaten up and less stealworthy, and spread from there, both as function and as an anti-brand signifer all its own. I don’t know if you’d class that with a Sharpie, but it’s matte, subtle, blends well with virtually any black surface, and has a history and weight of its own. You might also appreciate the sort of distressed effect. This flash-blasted image shows it pretty well; I'll post a more natural one in a second.

(Also in the illustration, note I would’ve picked up a black on black jacket - that’s just the best picture available on a quick GIS and shows the construction better.)

>>6475406
