people suggest you don't wash them for the first 6 months. the first wash is significant because it will take out some of the dye (creating less contrast) and the starch (making them softer). i suppose this also happens with subsequent washes too.

It's kind of hard to say what works since sizing and cut varies a lot depending on the model. Like the levis jeans sizing have been all over the place depending on the model.
I can tell you couple brands that didn't work well for me. Unbranded 201, j.crew urban slim, uniqlo cropped s, levi 511 black stretch.
