Sup /fa/.

I was thinking about this earlier: there's a cycle with everything related to fashion and 'cool' that could be expressed as follows:
>X is underground/nxtlvl/nowhere near the public consciousness. A few early adopters are aware and a small following develops by word of mouth
>X's small following is picked up on by a coolhunter of some description, be it a fashion writer, celebrity or whoever it is that dresses Kanye and Jay-Z. The general public become vaguely aware of X
>X becomes the benchmark for cool, others try to emulate its style
>X goes mainstream, becomes passé, the cool kids move onto something else

With that in mind, does Rick's collaboration with Adidas spell the beginning of the end? I've no doubts Rick as a designer will endure and move on to newer aesthetics, but I'm increasingly getting the feeling that what you guys call gothninja is about to explode into the mainstream. Rick's name is getting out there, more and more articles about his designs are hitting the web every day. I found a shop in Covent Garden selling what were very clearly cheap ripoffs of Rick's designs, even Zara lifted elements from the Geobasket for a couple of pairs of shoes from last season's collection. Plus the music world is predicting a goth revival on the horizon.

With this in mind, if/when gothninja goes mainstream and everyone on your street is wearing black dropcrotch shorts and long black silk t-shirts, what will the next thing for the /fa/ crowd be?

it hardly works this way. good design becomes canonical.

i don't get the problem. a lot of people are going to wear all black and high fashion knock offs. so? i'm wearing all black for 7 years and that will never change.

OP, zara, hm and every fast fashion brand has been ripping off Rick (and all the other large houses/designers) for years. Yohji has been collaberating with adidas for an awful long time, yet he is still highly regarded. Ricks collab with eastpak didn't push him off the stage and this collab wont either. Youre most likely - and i dont mean this in a condescending way - just a bit new to the whole high fashion game and noticing more and more people wearing, for example, rick.

Cdg did a collab with fucking HM, kawakubo is still highly relevant, rick has been worn by basically every single celebrity for the past decade, etc.

i haven't seen anything in H&M or topman that looks remotely like rick. they still make plaid shorts and place-based false nostalgia print tees and hoodies.

closest you'll get is all saints, which is less close to rick than it is julius, android homme, surface 2 air, geller, plokhov, etc. people think tight-fitting dark clothes with lots of zippers and pockets is rick owens. the association is made by people who don't actually pay attention to these brands or clothes. rick doesnt make anything with maximal post-apocalyptic detail like pic (demobaza).

pay more attention to the womenswear, rick's biker jacket for example has been knocked off by nearly every womenswear brand with pretensions towards luxury, to speak nothing of his drape cardigans.

HM has put out a lot of shitty wedges and square cut draped cardigans the past years, watered down of course, but still copied from Rick.

EVERY fast fashion store does this. Monki put out an exact replica of the Damir Doma creepers earlier this year, H&M copied McQueen's prints a few years back, etc.

I bought the topman one on sale for £25.

I wasn't looking for a rick knockoff. I saw this sick waxed Balmain bomber for too much money so I copped the Topman jacket and used some leftover wax for my Belstaff and it turned out pretty boss (and is so useful for this rainy summer). About a week later I stumbled across the dick ovens jacket and lolled.

When discussing personal style, yeah, a large majority of posters are men, but this thread is about the apparent demise of Rick Owens as a brand, which is kind of silly.

On that note, I didn't really like F/W 14 at all, S/S is much better but I haven't given it enough thought yet to decide what I feel about it. S/S 13 was amazing so I guess I'm a little bit bummed out he didn't go further into that direction. :V

ps. the shoes are cool as hell, dunno if they'd fit into what I normally wear, though.

it does't work that way at all for anyone that's truly into fashion. but for the majority of /fa/, that's a routine cycle.
