Anything goes as long as it's well done and seems purposeful. Slim cuts have been standard for the better part of a decade now. I'm a fan of natural looking hair with hold as well.

How I achieve it:

After showering, dry your hair with a towel, hair should still be wet, but not completely soaked.
Then I take American Crew Superglue, and massage it into my hair.
Next, I take a round brush and start to blow dry. I have longer hair on top, which means I can twist it accordingly, to get my desired hold.

tl;dr Just try American Crew Superglue in wet hair and blow dry it.
