The issue is that leathergoods are the bread and butter for the vast majority of high end shoe manufacturers. Forcing them to stop using it would make a massive portion of the industry go bankrupt. The demand for leathergoods is extremely high, so if you want to re-invent the way shoes are produced, you have to lower the public's interest in leathergoods. I personally agree that the way many things are manufactured is not sustainable, but that doesnt really matter, because the cutters and the sewers in the factories have to eat. At to eat, they need to make products that they can make a living from.

The thing is in my view, that the bottom line for a designer is aesthetics. That is our trade. One of the biggest reasons we choose the materials we work with is how they look and the properties they have. Unfortunately for cows, the properties of their hides are extremely appealing, and there is really no substitute that carries the same attributes, regardless of human attempts to make a synthetic replacement.

The fundamental parts of design reject the notion of sacrificing style for moral reasons. There are a few designers that think differently, but when am investing countless hours into creating a product, i want to use the best mediums i can to create it, which, unfortunately is leather quite often.

The materials are what dictate the aesthetic of what we are making, its not a question of innovation i think. You can be innovative with any medium. I just happen to like drawing in pen for example, many people like drawing in pencil. They can both be used, and behave differently in a drawing than one another. Both of them have certain, but different limitations. Some people like working in calf skin. That is their medium of choice. They like the properties and parameters for design it offers, and enjoy the results it yields when they use it. They could be just as creative with hemp canvas, but thats missing the point. The properties are different and wont yield the same results. A designer's job isnt to be a conservationist. Its to invent products, and sell them, and thats it, thats the bottom line, regardless of any other concerns.

for reference, my exact chest measurement is 34.5" and i fit XS perfectly in ricks leathers.

36-37 will fit S

38-39.5 or so will fit M

you also should consider your shoulder width. mine is 15 3/4", and again that fits XS. 16.5-17 will fit S 17.5-18.25 or so will fit M
