My ex used to watch this show religiously. I think Joan makes some decent points and there's occasionally a bit of real fashion discourse on the show but I remember when they had deadmau5 on stage and nobody seemed to notice that he looked pretty awful. For the most part my issue with the show is "who really actually gives a shit about that world and those people?"

Most of the time, when I see red carpet half of me is all like "Isn't that cute, they're pretending to be fashionable!" It's like a halloween party, let's be honest. It's very obv that most of these people are much happier in jeans and a t-shirt.

I mean sure, some watershed stuff occasionally comes out of it that trickles back down to the design floor and influences waves of trend, but for the most part when you see celebs in designer gear without their stylists directly involved it's kind of sad.
Like Brad Pitt butchering that rick jacket, John Mayer publicly shaming those innocent Geobaskets and Robert Downey looking like a schizophrenic dad (to steal a phrase usually reserved for Raf Simons jokes).
If anything these people are just like any other completely average wealthy human being it comes to clothing. Outside of knowing which looks to avoid, caring about what these people wear is like following fashion vicariously through some ubiquitous third party. They're just consumers, and half the time they can't even wear it right without a support team. Forget the lot of 'em, but I *will* be paying attention to their stylists' resume & blogs when they merit the attention.

If you get really good at anything and you have a forum in which you are a trusted authority on a subject, congratulations, you can monetize your own knowledge.

idk not really although i watch the show anyway because i'm a faggot

last night i heard them critique a thom browne suit with "it's 4 sizes too small did they get this at baby gap" clearly not having a lot of knowledge of the designer. i think joan herself though knows a lot about clothes but dumbs down for television

what i have learned from the show is that even with money and stylists celebrities still manage to dress horribly

Joan definitely knows her shit, and I think she says a lot of stuff for laughs even though deep down she knows why she ought not to be saying it.
She's also coming from a certain older, more established POV, though. I feel like she's earned the right to just blurt out what's on everyone else's minds whether they'll admit it or not.

On the real tho, the show is shit and the guests are shit and I'm glad I don't have it playing in the background anymore.
