6269032 No.6269032 [Reply] [Original]

A few weeks ago we had a 'Mood Board' that explored styling found on EVA suits, flight gear and military surplus.
Since then I've been tracking down plausible garments for off world colonists and orbital technicians. I've taken care to hit a wide range of pricepoints and avoid the sometimes fuzzy borders of cosplay territory.
Although I'm sure that designers have touched upon this stuff before (Helmut Lang comes to mind), the style doesn't really exist in a formalized way and so we'll need to use our imaginations to envision these looks. That means finding individual pieces and taking them out of the context in which they are being presented & marketed.
Try to assemble a complete retrotech fit in your mind, rather than accepting the garments as they are presented in the pictures. I've included a few things that are impossible to find simply because they deserve to be noticed.

Finally, I think there's a future for DIY distressing in the pursuit of this look. Decay reinforces the notion of "forgotten futures" and helps carry the motif of bruised utility that we saw in plenty of hard use space garments during the previous thread.

Done right, I think this look could be both forward-thinking and accessible to many of us.

I know distressing is a touchy subject with /fa/, but here I think it could work, especially with a shredded tee, a technical or heritage jacket and one of the shoes I'll be posting later on.
The 'accordion folds' around the waist, the crumpled utility pockets and the battered, dun colored textile all evoke the old Russian 'Orlan' suits to me.

It implies that you serve a highly specialized function but are a citizen first. It also helps you avoid stepping over that oft fuzzy line I mentioned in the OP.

That said, these are a nylon/cotton blend, they're stronger then denim, more breathable and they're made by Outlier in NYC with American materials.

It hangs on the body differently and it stacks along the outside of the knee, mimicking the accordion fold joints of many EVA suits. The seams curving around the back of your legs look subtly tech, as seen in >>6269227

It also offers a certain freedom of mobility, and acts as somewhat of a gusset. When I sit down in a proper engineered curve leg, the bottom of the pant never rides up, it stays put.

The curve on this Boris piece likely gives a beautiful stacking effect along the arms, which is why I've included it.

Keep in mind that dyeing the fabric would require very hot water and that might shrink the whole piece enough to play havoc with the zippers.
I would recommend looking at aerosol fabric paints and dyes - you'll get a great faded look if you fold the garment along the seams and spray dye it sectionally. After it dries you do another section. If you have a good touch with the aerosol you'll get a gnarly, aged looking hood that fades into grey along its seams. Think about it.

That hoodie is spectacular - srsly. I think it could be done by one of us, with first a cheese grater or dremel to certain parts - those are the parts that will show dark. Then you use either a partial spray die, waterbase latex aerosol or even atomized bleach, dusting the head and shoulders from a consistent angle as the garment is sitting on the mannequin. Alternatively, one could leave it in a sunny spot for a few months, with objects or arcs of paper overlaid like stencils. The garment will fade accordingly.

I don't know for sure, ofc - but it would be fun to get into doing this sort of thing on a deep level. I bet I can find a book for this sort of thing in costume design, and thin out the techniques for civilian use.

A bit of bleach just to lighten the color and degrade the fabric in certain areas. Obv, you'd wash the garment before you wear it.
Now that I think about it, the ideal thing to do would probably be just leaving it some place where the elements can beat on it for a while. Especially sunlight and rain..

What are these called? What's the functionality behind the double zip?

Check out Hyperlite Mountain Gear, poet. They make extremely technical camping gear, and their bags would be perfect for the look.

Also, everyone, archive this.

a lot of incredible finds poet, its a shame I've probably missed a few of these threads. you're persistent posting of futuristic/space imagery probably had a hand in my gravitation towards this style long ago. you're as close as they come to Trendsetter around here.
I can't participate like I originally intended, not right now at least, so I hope these threads are being archived one way or another.

I was outbidded on eBay two years ago on a light brown shearling mille miglia cp goggle jacket by an auto bidder. its twice as disappointing now than it was then.

isoara has a 50% off sale on black Friday, I think I might save for a few things.

I had a go at mixing that Raeburn jacket with Sousou tabi shoes and some cheap cargo shorts. I'm pretty happy with it. I wouldn't consider the fit to be 100% astro but it's in that direction. Considering picking up some tech flight pants and zipper-encrusted boots to push the fit further.

BTW the theme of Raeburn's SS13 collection is Deploy/Flight. I think he's on the cutting edge of this look right now.

I've done that, but it doesn't really work out (for clothing, you can do some fucking crazy graffiti with bleach if you're into that), a pump pen is too stiff for anything not properly tightened.

The best way, if you want to do more intricate designs like this, is to cut a sponge into the tip you want and just use it like a marker, albeit with less pressure (not only will the fabric stick and bunch, it'll flow out into the fabric in ways you can't really control).

>> No.6274432

>>6274395
There's definitely some of that, but this is more specific and leans heavier on distressing & heritage garments. Most techwear is unabashedly future - we're looking for forgotten futures, decayed utility and re-purposed vintage. The techwear of yesteryear, or things that imply it.
Repurposing is key here and I really think some of the look's best incarnations will come from recontextualized garments.
Contrasting old and new, fresh and decayed within the same fit might also be key, but not essential.

Seriously, just read it. It's maybe the most far-ranging and incisive analysis of our current cultural and political malaise I've seen, and it all starts with a question one could translate thusly:

Yo, capitalism, where's all the awesome stuff in the pictures poet posts? It's 2013 and we're pining for "forgotten futures." Why are we talking about plausible garments for off world colonists and orbital technicians, instead of yelling at them for being plebs while we luxuriate in our post-work lifestyle wearing fits we literally cannot imagine?

There's a whole lot I want to say about this, but I've sent off most of the books I have that argue counterpoint to other /fa/scists.
To summarize, I think that the problem with forgotten futures is that they didn't take into account the way existing and emerging technologies would change the cultural landscape and make those futures obsolete.
There's a short story by Gibson that addresses this very eloquently. It's really an essay on why those futures never came to be, but it makes its point via narrative. It's called "The Gernsback Continuum":
