if you're worried, get a black rubber half-sole (a very thin sole) put on them before you wear them. any cobbler will do it for $50. replace as necessary. will keep the underlying leather pristine forever.

the sole is repairable, it's even replaceable. if you wanted you could stick it on a welt. it would totally defeat the purpose and be really expensive, but it's possible.
