I have a bit of time to kill, so I figured I'd share a few images I've been collecting for a while.
The gas mask is a fascinating garment to me on account of how well it conveys panic, menace and an aura of death. It has the tendency to dehumanize the wearer and its similarity to the skull is apropos and well deserved.
In traditional cultures, the role of the mask is one that subsumes its wearer. Masks are often thought of as alive, or as vessels for powerful spiritual entities. In this sense, I see the gas mask as a post industrial echo of ancient times: the wearer becomes somehow 'other' than human. Even though its purpose is mere survival, it carries the weight of many implications.
I also think that seeing it in different contexts is an excellent example of nonverbal communication via clothing.

Stop making shit up.

Has masks are a piece of defense of war. Unless you're some edgy hipster in Brooklyn or a native of Beijing where you can't see 4 feet in front of your face because of the goddamn smog, there is nothing you can do to justify making gas masks a piece of fashion, or art.

I'm pretty sure that in the past you've lamented on about how ridiculous threads like:

>is this gun /fa/
>is this car /fa/
etc

bring nothing to the discussion of fashion.

Then you take a short break, looking through wikipedia and a bunch of other randy sites about gas masks and you come to /fa/ like you just found some sort of fucking revelation in fashion. Quite hypocritical. (KO #1)

I also find vacuum cleaners aesthetically pleasing, yet they have nothing to do with /fa/. I'm not dumping my fucking vacuum cleaner folder here, am I? This ain't your blog nigga. You casemods? Oh shit nigga, that's KO #2

I may have lamented cars and guns at some point, but the more I learn about design and style, the more I see the value of raising those questions at some point.

This is not a gun or car thread, though. This is about a mask, a garment, that carries a strong cultural message, possesses a storied history and has been adopted by costume and fashion designers many times over in some form or another.

That's astonishing, thank you! Definitely onto my reading list!

In the older masks, the filter was always activated charcoal. I'm not sure if that still is the case...
Activated charcoal sucks toxins out of everything, so if you ever find yourself trying on an older mask in an army navy or an antique store somewhere, don't breathe in too deeply through the filter - heaven knows what it's soaked up over the years.

Discarded masks in Pripyat.
A great example of the history we associate with them. Even alone, rotting on a floor, they're such a powerful symbol of decay, panic, cold war tension, apocalyptic visions and doomed civilians.

I did once, a while ago, I believe.
But there are a lot of particulars I never went into.
I think that a lot of the rave experience (for me) boiled down into a series of beautiful moments, perfect instants that were besotted with really deeply felt emotions that are hard to get into unless I go down the road of poetry and lengthy posts.
I saw a few crazy things, sure, but the stuff that stands out is harder to really convey, like rolling around in a cuddle puddle, or 500 people stomping their right foot in tune to a hard Goa track, or spooning with a beautiful dancer in a perfectly lit chill out room.
It's hard to convey without context, and if merely posting respirators and masks drives an anon into enough of frenzy to label me as cancer, then imagine what that sort of a narrative would result in?
When I feel it, i'll let it all out. I promise. It's just hard to talk about, to tell someone about, without sounding like too much of a sap.

Eyes are the most efficient method of looking into the soul of a person. The nuances of every emotion come out through it. But these these perfectly circular eye coverings give off no detail.

I was using it in the sense of the memories being soaked in emotional weight. Alluding to liquid, weighing something down. In this case the liquid, the wine, was emotional memory.

You needn't always use words how the dictionary tells you, you know. There's a lot of fun to be had playing around with things like this. So what if you make a mistake here or there? So what if you change contexts, or make odd allusions, or stretch and warp meaning?

Really though - Who cares? I'm just writing from the heart and the hip. I'm not here to impress you, or impress anyone else. I'm just here being me, sharing the things I love. I don't come here to pretend, I come here to share and to learn.

What I don't come here to do is attempt to elevate myself by making cheap digs at other people who are only trying their best, only proceeding with hope and good intentions. I don't come here to shit on people, I don't come here to call them retarded or add poison to their dialogues. I don't come here because I am small and worthless inside. I don't come here and deride others about minute and unimportant bullshit like the use of a single word in a thread that's about to top 150 replies.

For those who haven't seen the plague masks before (i'm sure you all have, but hey), they were worn by doctors during the time of the Bubonic Plague in Europe.
The idea of infection as we now recognize it did not exist, but people were afraid of "bad air", "foul humors" and the like.
The beak was filled with potpourri or spices, to mask the scent of death.

We *were* there! The nomad thread, the architecture thread, there are lots of examples. 4chan is like that though - you have to wade through some shit in order to pick out the diamonds.
I still think that eclectic threads like these are one of the larger gems in our crown. We can encourage this sort of discourse, but leading by example is never painless.

Pic related is an engraving (?) of plague doctor from a satirical poem. His name means "Doctor Beak from Rome".

“This piece was primarily a trust exercise, in which she told viewers she would not move for six hours no matter what they did to her. She placed 72 objects one could use in pleasing or destructive ways, ranging from flowers and a feather boa to a knife and a loaded pistol, on a table near her and invited the viewers to use them on her however they wanted.

Initially, Abramović said, viewers were peaceful and timid, but it escalated to violence quickly. “The experience I learned was that … if you leave decision to the public, you can be killed… I felt really violated: they cut my clothes, stuck rose thorns in my stomach, one person aimed the gun at my head, and another took it away. It created an aggressive atmosphere. After exactly 6 hours, as planned, I stood up and started walking toward the public. Everyone ran away, escaping an actual confrontation.”

This piece revealed something terrible about humanity, similar to what Philip Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment or Stanley Milgram’s Obedience Experiment, both of which also proved how readily people will harm one another under unusual circumstances.”

This performance showed just how easy it is to dehumanize a person who doesn’t fight back, and is particularly powerful because it defies what we think we know about ourselves. I’m certain the no one reading this believes the people around him/her capable of doing such things to another human being, but this performance proves otherwise.”

I've worn a gas mask before. It was mildly uncomfortable, especially the time I puked with it on, but I'll tell you it was much worse going through the cs gas the first time and NOT having the mask. That was really unpleasant. I'm cool with talking about them still.
