trying to solidify the style im thinking for this summer, something urban and unassuming or quiet but vaguely informed by a certain rural/fishing village japan aesthetic, ie linen shirt + black trousers + grey nb574's

It's about 13000yen for the shinkansen. But you can get some overnight buses for like 3000yen. See about getting a rail pass if you're going to travel alone for a bit.
My advice: don't spend much before you go, especially if you're going to Osaka or Tokyo. All those Japanese brands are a million times cheaper in Japan.
Never been to Hiroshima actually. Though I did live in Fukuoka for a while. Osaka is nice. Meeting the mayor would be cool. Going on a government sponsorship?

OP, I'd recommend checking out RIDSNAP. I feel like they have a lot of the sort of stuff you're looking for. Some of it's kind of out there (like pic related), but it might serve as good inspiration for a more understated fit. (Although I completely advocate wearing eccentric fits.)

Akihabara good if you're a weeaboo, alright if you're not. Ura-harajuku and harajuku is alot of lolita stores, but there's a big avenue with loads of non-lolita stores.
Just go to stores even if you can't afford it. First time I went, I just went to stores and rubbed the fabrics against my fingers and looked at the details. This was in every store. 1ldk store is a pretty cool concept store.
